The Browning Citori Hunter Grade II over/under superposed modern shotguns have a full hinge pin, low-profile engraved receiver, rugged looks, 50/50 POI a great feature roster and more. This 2021 SHOT Show Special lineup spans 12-gauge, 16-gauge, 20-gauge, 28-gauge and .410 bore. Each has a 26” and 28” barreled model making 10 choices total.

The 16 and 28-gauge guns have 2 3/4" chambers while the others have 3” chambers. In all cases, the chambers are chrome plated.

Citori is Browning’s upscale line of double-barreled shotguns, but within it, the Hunter Grade II is a step up from the very similar Hunter Grade I. In fact, the difference between the two ends is neat. The Hunter Grade II has Grade II/III walnut and silver nitride finishes for the receiver, trigger guard, tang safety and selector. The Hunter Grade I has Grade I walnut and blued finishes for the receiver, trigger guard, tang safety and selector.

So back to the Hunter Grade II. Its polished silver nitride receiver has hammer blow driven ejectors. The satin polished Grade II/III walnut forearm and American stock are beautiful. They have with 18 lines per inch (18 LPI) checkering.

You can get this lineup with either a 26” or 28” length barrels. Each gun is 17” longer than its double barrels. Thus the 26” barrel models are 43” long overall while the 28” barrel guns span 45”. Weight ranges from the 20-gauge 26” barrel model that is 6 pounds 8 ounces up to the 12-gauge 28” barrel model that is 7 pounds 12 ounces.

The steel barrels are polished blued. Each upper barrel is crowned by a 1/4" vent rib that runs its length. The length is serrated and checkered for glare reduction. And each upper barrel gets a silver bead front sight.

The 12-gauge and 20-gauge models use Invector-Plus flush chokes (full, improved cylinder and modified). These are Browning’s longest chokes. The others use Standard Invector flush chokes.

Moving back is a textured tang paddle release and serrated sliding safety/selector. Both these have a silver nitride finish. And the stock is not just beautiful but wonderfully contoured with its highly functional American stock. At back is a thick, absorbent and comfortable recoil pad. In each case, length of pull is 14 1/4". Drop at comb is 1 5/8" while drop at heel is 2 1/2".

What else? The gun features finely detailed matte checkering within pennants on both the forearm and grip. The grip texturing reaches higher perhaps than normal on grips and then the surrounding pennant ends. Then a groove line from each side runs to the top to make an eye-grabbing “V” pattern behind the safety/selector. However, the design lacks sling swivel studs.

Moving further down, the steel trigger guard is tough, resilient. Like the receiver, selector and safety, it has an attractive silver nitride finish. Inside is an alloy gold plated serrated trigger. It’s an inertia trigger. Each shot uses recoil energy to set up the next shot until all shots are expended.

Of course, there are no magazines, so its capacity is two loads, one per barrel. While Browning is an iconic American brand, it’s owned by Belgian FN Herstal, and these Citoris are Made in Japan by Miroku Corporation.
