The Browning Cynergy Over/Under 12-gauge and 20-gauge shotguns are wonderfully innovative. There are currently seven Cynergy Over/Under shotguns: the Cynergy Wicked Wing, Cynergy Ultimate Turkey Mossy Oak Break-Up Country, Cynergy CX, Cynergy CX with Adjustable Comb, Cynergy CX Composite and Cynergy Field. There is also a unique double-barrel/single-barrel Cynergy with an adjustable rib.

Let’s take a look:

The Cynergy Wicked Wing 12-gauge 3 ½” chamber debuted in 2021. It has a burnt bronze Cerakote cover on the steel barrel and steel receiver coupled with Mossy Oak Shadow Grass Habitat camouflage swathed across the synthetic forearm and buttstock. The buttstock has a very large adjustable comb. Its 26”, 28” and 30” barrel variants measure 43”, 45” and 47” overall and weighing 7 pounds 6 ounces and then increasing in two-ounce increments. All three are topped by a 5/16” vented rib and an ivory bead. The alloy trigger is surrounded by a steel trigger guard with the traditional gold Buck Mark on its ventral surface. The trio of Invector Plus chokes that comes with this gun is Full, Improved Cylinder and Modified.

There are features and traits you might expect in this level of gun. For starters, it has a modern low-profile receiver. It has engraving on the receiver, textured checkering on the walnut forend and stock, a gold trigger housed in a contemporary looking angled trigger guard, chrome-lined barrels, chrome-lined chambers and more.

But that’s just the beginning. Get past this solid foundation, and there are some very impressive features integrated to provide precision, reliability and the ability to fire fast and accurately.

For one, the models with the Inflex buttpad have stellar recoil mitigation. The Inflex is not simply screwed to the straight back end of the stock. Rather the stock has been shaped with a giant concave angle permitting a much deeper buttpad integrated into that same space. This provides a lot more recoil mitigation than normal. Browning claims it reduces felt recoil 25% for 12-gauge guns and makes it almost zero in the smaller gauges. There are three .5” pad lengths and a .25” spacer to get you the LOP that’s best for you. And a Parylene polymer coat keeps the pad’s contact surface pliant and soft.

The Reverse Striker Mechanical Trigger ignition system literally reverses the spring 180-degrees making it shorter thus making the locktime shorter too. It also ensures the second barrel never misfires.

Also the standard barrel selector is integrated into the tang safety. It allows you to determine which barrel to fire in any order. The Triple Trigger System makes it possible to adjust the length of pull. You can also switch between wide checkered, narrow smooth or wide smooth canted trigger shoes.

Browning’s Cynergy barrels use Vector Pro necked internal silhouettes and back-boring. Thus, the barrels’ internal diameter is bigger at the chamber end than it is in the standard bore portion of the tube. This expansion is done using back-boring. In between this larger section and the standard bore, the tube tapers, which is what gives it the characteristic Vector Pro profile. This minimizes shot deformation and makes the patterns as uniform and dense as possible.

Cynergy MonoLock Hinges integrate the monobloc and hinge into a singular tough component that helps create the sleek lines of Cynergy’s low-profile receiver. Browning points out that this results in 300% more pivot surface area versus classic trunnion hinges.

Cynergys have impact ejectors rather than extractors. With extractors, spent casings stay in the gun but are in easy reach. With ejectors, the empty casings fling free. So if you’ve fired one and break open the gun, only that spent casing is ejected while the unfired cartridge remains in the gun.

Let’s look at a few more models.

Cynergy Ultimate Turkey, Mossy Oak Break-Up Country 12-gauge is similar to the aforementioned model. However, this one has a Mossy Oak Break-Up Country camo scheme. It also features a fiber-optic sight in front, a short Picatinny rail to mount a red dot optic sight, and just behind it, a Marble Arms Bullseye rear sight. It has a 60/40 POI ratio. It has 24” and 26” length barrel variants measuring 41” and 43” overall and weighing 7 pounds 4 ounces and then increasing in two-ounce increments.

The Cynergy CX 12-gauge has a Grade I walnut stock and forend. The barrels are satin blued and the receiver has a silver nitride finish. It has a contoured Inflex recoil pad, but not the same aggressive one that’s integrated into the Cynergy synthetic stocks. Barrel choices are 28”, 30” and 32” with overall lengths that are 46”, 48” and 50” respectively. The 28” weighs 7 pounds 12 ounces. The other two increase in two-ounce increments. It has an ivory bead front sight.

The Cynergy CX with Adjustable Comb is the same three lengths, etc., as the previous model except, obviously, the comb is adjustable. This adds 6 ounces of weight to each model. Thus the 28” weighs 8 pounds 2 ounces and then each increments up by two ounces.

The Cynergy CX Composite is like the previous model but uses a charcoal gray synthetic forend and stock. Thus, it has three variants. Barrel choices are 28”, 30” and 32” with overall lengths that are 46”, 48” and 50” respectively. The 28” weighs 7 pounds 12 ounces, thus saving 6 ounces of weight compared to the walnut furnitured Cynergy CX with Adjustable Comb. Not surprisingly, each barrel length increases weight in two-ounce increments.

The Cynergy Field is available in 12-gauge (26” and 28” length barrels) or 20-gauge (also 26” and 28” length barrels). It uses a darker black walnut wood. The 12-gauge models weigh 7 pounds 9 ounces and 7 pounds 11 ounces respectively while the 20-gauge models only weigh 6 pounds 2 ounces and 6 pounds 4 ounces respectively.

This summary touches lightly upon some of the major characteristics of this very impressive Browning Cynergy Over/Under 12-gauge and 20-gauge shotgun lineup.
