The BUL Armory SAS II SL AIR is an ultra-modern full-size M1911 semi-automatic chambered for 9 mm, .40 S&W and 9x21 mm ammo. For those familiar with BUL’s SL product line, the hand-built SAS II SL AIR takes the SL, adds a golden titanium nitride coating to the 5.0” barrel and dials in breathtaking lightening oval ports where the front grip serrations should be. Essentially, BUL deepened all eight front serrations into lightening ports. This begs the question of whether this idea will soon become prevalent across the industry. The barrel-vaulted slide top also has eight oval lightening ports, bringing the total to 24!

All this lightening work shaves almost an ounce from gun. This makes the slide lighter, thus reducing inertial mass, decreasing felt recoil, speeding up cycle times and ultimately promoting faster follow up shots. Atop the slide is a red fiber optic front sight and a low profile fully adjustable rear one.

The BUL rear sight is made in house. It has the very low, extended Bomar-like flat box profile albeit with a dovetail slide cut. The sight is serrated and fully adjustable for height and elevation. Its advantage is how far back its blackout rear blade ends up, which increases the sight radius, bequeathing improved accuracy for target/competition shooting.

The gun’s stainless steel frame remains either stainless steel or gets a black stainless steel finish treatment. Either way, it looks great. It has a full dust cover that squares off the gun’s muzzle area and further sets it apart from the classic M1911 style. The additional forward weight helps offset upward recoil. But note: a Picatinny rail is available instead of the full dust cover.

At SAS II SL AIR’s heart is a match-grade 5.0” long ramped bull barrel with a golden titanium nitride finish. This beautiful gold hew is brilliantly visible through the lightening ports, at the protruding muzzle and ejection port. It helps make an already outstanding gun stand out further.

The gun has extended ambidextrous thumb safeties at back, an extended upturned beavertail and corresponding grip safety. The black BUL SAS2 polymer grips are diamond hatched and have the BUL logo at center. And, of course, SAS II SL AIR features a lowered and beveled ejection port. It has an extended, flared magazine well for easy magazine swaps. The magazine release is oversize and on the left.

The gun has been designed to be out of the box ready for IPSC and USPSA competitions. Not surprisingly, trigger pull is very light and is factory-set to 2.0 to 2.5 pounds. The trigger is double-ported, and its breaks are clean and crisp.

The SAS II SL AIR weighs 37.7 ounces. The gun comes with three magazines. For 9 mm, this means three 19-round magazines while for .40 S&W is a trio of 17-roung mags. BUL Armory started making arms in 1990 and is based in Tel Aviv, Israel.
