The Made in Czech Republic CZ 550 bolt-action rifle has its roots in the German Mauser 98 rifle. There’s a certain honest, rugged simplicity to the CZ 550, regardless of model. The CZ 550 is embodied in three models: the CZ 550 American Safari Magnum, CZ 550 Safari Magnum, and CZ 550 FS.
The CZ 550 FS has the good looking full-length Mannlicher stock that goes all the way to the tip of the muzzle. It (and all other CZ FS models) features a 3-position safety for safe (bolt locked; trigger locked), mid (bolt unlocked; trigger locked) and ready (bolt unlocked; trigger unlocked). It has a short 20.5” long barrel and iron sights. It also comes with a steel muzzle cap. The CZ 550 FS was discontinued in 2017.
The CZ 550 Safari Magnum has a Turkish walnut stock and a blued hammer forged barrel. The stock has a beautiful classic Safari stock shape. Its magazine can hold 3 Rigby or 5 rounds of 375 H&H ammo. This gun has with three-leaf express sights. These are a trio of flip up, fold down sights on a single mount with shallow V-notch cuts that fold up for pre-set ranges (e.g. 100 yards, 200 yards and 300 yards).
The forend has a slight reinforced Schnabel contour to it while the rear of the stock is raised semi-Monte Carlo-style. The wood is elegant and features finely engraved texturing on the forend and grip. It was discontinued in 2020.
The CZ 550 American Safari Magnum has a fairly conventional stock with straight ramping lines on the top and bottom of the stock and a standard snag-free forend. The walnut looks great and contrasts nicely with the blued barrel. The stock has a pair of QD sling studs in front and back.
You can also get this gun with a synthetic stock. The stock was designed to use with scopes, which is why it’s elevated as it is and has the flat comb. It comes standard with iron sights and is ready to mount a scope. Beyond the contour of the stock, it is very similar to the CZ 550 Safari Magnum. This model was also discontinued in 2020.
