The Charter Arms Mag Pug is an entry-level compact lineup of three 5-round .357 Magnum caliber revolvers. Planned for economies of scale, all three have a 2.2” long barrel, stainless steel frame and full size black rubber grips with three finger grooves. These guns weigh 23 ounces, which isn’t bad for stainless steel and this barrel length.

The base version has a traditional spur hammer. The second model has no external hammer and is double-action. The third model has the spur hammer and Crimson Trace grips that include a red laser designator atop the right grip. The first two models also have a 4” barrel Target variant.

The company has been in business since 1964 and is currently located in Shelton, Connecticut. From here, which is about 10 miles north of Long Island Sound, it has delighted in revealing new products over the years. Its design ethos centers around lightweight one-piece frames instead of two-part ones screwed together. It uses eight-groove barrels instead of more common six-groove ones. Its barrels always shroud their ejector rods. The guns are designed around short hammer throws, wide triggers and wide hammer spurs, etc.

Sighting is done via a long ramp fixed front sight and a fixed rear sight. The cylinder is partially fluted with indents that look like they were made by bullets facing backward. The trigger is curved and sits in a snag-free egg-shaped trigger guard.

Finally, the grip is rubber with a deep undercut, three finger recesses and little mounds on either side, all of which combine for a comfortable, good grip.
