The 4.25” barrel Commander-size Colt Combat Unit CCO comes as a 9+1 9 mm or a 7+1 .45 ACP. Either way, it’s a single-action M1911 A1-type semi-automatic pistol that satisfies sublimely rather than surprisingly. The 1911’s been a known entity for over 100 years and the Commander size for 70 years. This specific variant enjoyed input from US Special Forces Trainers who focused on enhanced accuracy, control, and reliability.

The CCO is also good looking with a tough all-black PVD finish, diagonal grip slide serrations at front and back, a classic loop hammer and upturned beavertail at back and a grip safety beneath. The gun has an ambidextrous thumb safety, which is always a nice touch for left-handers.

The .75” shorter Commander-length slide (and barrel) define this gun’s categorization and name. This slide is built around a 4.25” length National Match quality barrel while keeping the Government’s full-size frame. Thus it slots between the full-size Government 1911 and the Officer size compact 1911. Compared to the full-size Government, this shorter gun nails the scales at 32 ounces.

As already mentioned, this is a 9+1 capacity that operates using a 9-round single-stack magazine that has counting holes.

The gun has Novak sights in both front and rear. The gun operates using the Colt Series 80 firing system for smooth, consistent reliability.

At first glance, the trigger guard is the typical racetrack oval around a solid curved trigger. But look a bit closer, and you’ll notice a slightly undercut trigger guard.

Aesthetically, the best thing about this gun might be the custom G10 polymer grips. They’re fastened with flat-head screws, which is traditional, but then have a cool quasi-art deco burnished metal column look about them, which is not. Also these G10s have a wavy finger recess just behind the circular magazine release. Colt calls them “checkered gray with scallop” grips.

Elsewhere, the grip features 25 LPI checkering for that “just right” grip that’s neither too aggressive nor too light. The magwell is extended and flared, ensuring magazines will dock perfectly. If you’re looking for a Commander size M1911 from the company that invented them, then you’ve got an easy choice here at GunBroker.com.
