The name Colt Custom Competition SS (45 ACP) 1911 provokes high hopes Colt easily meets. Colt’s quasi-skunk works Custom Shop takes a Series 70 competition .45 ACP semi-automatic and has it beautifully hand-fitted by its master gunsmiths.

Colt unabashedly loves the 1911. And why not? It invented the type, and now roughly 110 years after it was adopted by the US Army, it still delivers as a consumer favorite not just in the USA, but worldwide. It does so reliably and faithfully in a way few other 110 year old products can.

The gun’s checklist faithfully ticks many of the usual statistics and check boxes, and that’s a good thing because it’s an excellent recipe. To wit, this is a full size single-action Government .45 ACP with a 5” long National Match barrel machined for extra-precise accuracy. Overall length is 8.5”. Capacity is 8+1 rather than 7+1 thanks to an extended magwell fully blended to integrate with the frame.

Competition SS has a brushed stainless steel slide and frame. Dovetailed into the front of the slide is a red fiber optic sight. It’s paired to a Bomar competition rear sight that’s fully finely adjustable for windage and elevation. There’s also a nice circular loop hammer. The slide has six diagonal serrations in front and another seven in back.

The beavertail safety grip is upturned while the thumb safety and slide stop are beveled. The matte metal finish atop the barrel, the diagonal serrations, the bushing housing, trigger guard, etc., provide a nice contrast with the stainless steel that dominates elsewhere.

The grip is just perfect with tough polymer VZ G10 Operator Grips providing beautiful blue waves on the flanks. These are fastened with a pair of flat-head screws and grouped with 25 LPI raised stainless steel checkering on the frontstrap and mainspring housing at back.

The Colt Custom Competition SS (45 ACP) is a beautifully crafted and nicely configured full size 1911 that’s sure to be an excellent addition to anyone’s collection.
