The Colt M4A1 SOCOM Carbine was rebooted in 2018 as a faithful replica of US Army’s .223 Remington/5.56 NATO gas operated M4A1 semi-automatic. This M4A1 is part of Colt’s AR-15 Military Classics lineup, and SOCOM stands for Special Operations Command.
The 30+1 capacity matte black semi is impressive. And the lower receiver boasts M4A1 CARBINE, and CAL. 5.56 MM and PROPERTY OF THE US GOVT though it will really be yours.
The M4 upper ditches the older A2 upper receiver carrying handle architecture and is topped by a MIL-STD-M1913 Picatinny rail. A much-appreciated ambidextrous safety selector makes the gun left-hand friendly.
The 9-ounce black anodized aluminum M4 RAS forend is by Knight's Armament. RAS is short for Rail Adapter System, and this versatile and rugged non-free float forend was devised for the M4 Carbine. It has a long Picatinny rail. Atop the gun you get a classic A2 front sight paired to a Matech folding rear sight. And of course, this M4 has a carbine-length gas system.
The chrome-lined heavy barrel is 14.5” long, but thanks to the welded birdcage A2 flash hider, its full-length is a compliant 16.1”. Inside, fired .223 / 5.56 rounds spin fast at a tight 1:7” twist ratio.
In back is a four-stop squeeze lever collapsible stock allowing you to set length of pull to your liking and overall length from 32.0” to 35.5”. The stock is durable and pleasantly light, but the butt still has about the same contact area as the older A2 buttstocks.
Underneath the forend is a lightweight M203 Flat adaptor rail for self-illuminated optical sights that facilitate fast targeting. You also get an A2-style pistol grip. The gun has a side sling swivel at the gas block and another at the butt heel. The Colt M4A1 SOCOM Carbine’s total weight is 6.95 pounds.
