The single-shot Connecticut Valley Arms (CVA) Scout break-action centerfire rifle is good-looking, lightweight, affordable and rugged! Flavors include the standard Scout and the versatile Scout TD, the latter being the take-down model. Whichever you pick, you get something that’s delightfully over-engineered.
CVA’s target was hunters on a budget and the youth market. Examples include the 20” barrel Scout .243 Win. Compact, Scout 6.5 Creedmoor Compact, Scout 7mm-08 Compact and Scout .350 Legend. There are also 22” barrel models represented by the Scout .44 Mag. And there are 25” barrel models such as the Scout .450 Bushmaster, Scout .45-70 Govt. and Scout .35 Whelen.
The ambidextrous Scouts feature extractors, so spent casings await at your fingertips when you break open the gun. They have a 14” length of pull, reversible cocking spurs, synthetic stocks and choices in barrels as denoted below. The 20”, 22” and 25” barrel guns measure 36”, 38” and 41” in respective overall lengths. CVA gives the weight range as 6.3 to 7.5 pounds. There is horizontal diamond checkered texturing on both the forearm and curved pistol grip. There are also two stud mounts.
In back, you get the nice thick, contoured, black rubber CVA CrushZone Recoil pad. This is an example of the overengineering. It’s designed for the Scout’s heavier caliber models, but it is standard on all of them.
Atop each gun comes a DuraSight scope rail. The scope itself isn’t included but the DuraSight is compatible with most contemporary scope rings. The standard models feature blued steel barrels on ambidextrous black synthetic stocks with fixed, sculpted cheek risers.
The Scout TD has two barrel length choices: 22” or 25”. Both barrel lengths are beautifully fluted stainless steel. The longer barrel is for heavier calibers. The take down process is toolless, quick and easy. Like the standard model, it comes with the DuraSight scope rail.
