DPMS History
DPMS stands for Defense Procurement Manufacturing Services, a company begun in 1985 by Randy Luth. Originally, Mr. Luth offered precision machine shop manufacturing of M16, M14 and M203 parts for Army contracts as well as Military Spec M16-AR-15 parts for the civilian market. Later DPMS began to focus more heavily on selling and designing its own rifle accessories and AR-15 parts. Soon DPMS acquired a lower receiver manufacturer and began machining precision barrels, leading to the creation of its own line of M16/AR-15 rifles. According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, DPMS is the second largest provider of AR-15 rifles.
Known for creating rather unconventional firearms – like single-shot and pump-action versions of the AR-15 – DPMS firearms and accessories consistently earn awards for innovation and reliability. Used around the world by military and law enforcement agencies, including the U. S. Border Patrol, DPMS firearms and accessories are also favored by big game hunters, competitive shooters and civilians.
