The DPMS Panther Arms GII SASS is a .308 Winchester / 7.62 NATO AR-15 style semi-automatic that comes in flat black. DPMS likes making .308 Win. / 7.62 NATO ARs, especially its GII series.

DPMS is now a subsidiary of Remington and has effectively disappeared as a stand-alone manufacturer. The initialism DPMS stands for Defense Procurement Manufacturing Services, and the company was located in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Now, it’s in Huntsville, Alabama.

The SASS (Semi-Automatic Sniper System) features a threaded 18” long 4150 Teflon-coated fluted bull barrel. The barrel has a 1 to 10” twist and comes with a great looking quad-pronged Panther flash suppressor that has a 1/2”-28 TPI thread.

A medium Picatinny rail crests the upper receiver, which is made of 7075-T6 aviation industry aluminum and has a shell deflector. The lower receiver is also 7075-T6 aluminum. Both upper and lower are thick Level 3 anodized and Teflon coated.

The SASS features Magpul MBUS (back up/flip up spring-loaded) sights. The rear sight is dual aperture and adjustable for windage while the front sight is elevation adjustable. Both are made of injection-molded polymer to keep weight down while keeping them strong and impact resistant.

DPMS stuck its own black DPMS 4 Rail free float handguard on this gun. As the name implies, it has Picatinny rails at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock. The handguard protects the barrel and has oval venting slots on all four diagonal sides. It also has a short hand stop at the front.

The GII SASS uses a DMPS 2-Stage trigger. DPMS makes the pistol grip in house. It’s a DPMS Panther Tactical Pistol Grip that is nicely contoured with finger recesses and a thick palmswell. It’s very comfortable, and at bottom is a palm rest (aka palm shelf) you can rest your hand on.

In back is a Made in USA Magpul PRS Gen2 stock optimized for configurability in length of pull, cant and cheek height while still giving strength and comfort. Such attributes are ideal for long waits. Indeed, PRS stands for Precision Rifle/Sniper. Length of pull and height adjustments are tool-less and done via a pair of adjustment knobs. The PRS Gen2 also has a pair of tandem M-LOK slots along the bottom and a thick, rubber, non-slip buttpad. Length of pull is adjustable over 1.4” and cheek height is adjustable up to .8”.

The entire Magpul PRS Gen2 assembly weighs 31.2 ounces, or a shade under two pounds. For durability, the stock’s aluminum surfaces are Class 2 hard anodized while the steel rods that keep the rubber butt pad attached to the rest of the stock are Melonite finished.

The DPMS GII SASS ships new with a 20-round magazine, a fold-up Harris Bi-Pod and an adapter to attach it to the gun’s ventral Picatinny rail. The gun weighs 10.5 pounds and spans 39.0” long overall.
