FN America’s FN 15 AR-type direct impingement semi-automatic pistol is accurate and reliable. It has two configurations: 5.56 x 45 mm NATO or .300 AAC Blackout (7.62 x 35 mm). Key dimensions for the 5.56 model are a 10.5” long barrel, 9” long handguard and an overall length of 26.25” while the gun tips the scales at just 5.2 pounds. The .300 AAC Blackout has a 12” long barrel, 10” long handguard, overall length of 28.6” and weighs 5.65 pounds. Both versions are black.

The two models differ in one other fact: they have differing components fronting the muzzle. The 5.56 model’s muzzle has an A2-style 1/2-28 TPI birdcage flash suppressor. In contrast, the .300 AAC’s has a recoil reducing black Melonite-finished double-chamber muzzle brake. It’s a ProComp 762 5/8-24 that’s made by Surefire.

By the way, FN America is the American subsidiary of FN Herstal of Belgium. The FN stands for Fabrique Nationale, which is French for National Factory. FN Herstal’s headquarters is located in Herstal in northeastern Belgium, and the company has been in business over 130 years, since mid-1889.

The company’s American headquarters is in McLean, Virginia, but except the FN Five Seven lightweight pistol, all of the American market firearms are manufactured in its modern Charleston, South Carolina facility.

Now let’s get back to some FN 15 specifics.

The free-floating handguard is by Midwest Industries. It’s a rather elegant octagonal cross section design that’s crested by an integrated Picatinny rail, and many M-LOK slots. There are no sights, but it’s ready to receive them. The flat-top receiver is hard-anodized aluminum also crested by an integrated Picatinny rail that aligns perfectly with the one from the handguard.

Not far behind the muzzle is a stainless-steel low profile gas block that’s part of the carbine-length gas system. Mostly concealed within the handguard is the carbine-length gas system and most of the barrel. The cold hammer-forged chrome-lined barrel has a 1 to 7” twist, and it’s free-floating.

The FN 15 features a curved FN combat trigger, slightly curved trigger guard that bridges between the beveled magwell and pistol grip. The pistol grip is a textured polymer Magpul MOE grip that has a beavertail backstrap for improved comfort and handling. It’s also hollow permitting storage through its bottom cap.

Bringing up the rear is an SBX-K pistol trapezoidal brace by SB Tactical. This is the shorter version of the perhaps more well-known standard SBX brace. The SBX-K weighs just over seven ounces and is 1.5” wide and 6.2” long.

The FN 15 comes standard with a Magpul PMAG 30 round magazine.
