The FN SLP Competition gas-operated 12-gauge is an impressive matte black 24” barrel semi-automatic shotgun that can fire over eight rounds per second. FN bills it as the “world’s fastest cycling shotgun.” For good reason, American Rifleman Magazine named the standard SLP 2009 Shotgun of the Year.

The SLP Competition draws attention for its aesthetics. The shotgun’s receiver and magazine tube are a cerulean blue hard-anodized. Its barrel, vent rib, forend and American-style curved grip stock, etc. are matte black. Moreover, it integrates sturdy components such as a lightweight alloy receiver with a 3” chamber, a two-piece bolt and a receiver-mounted bolt release. The operating handle is ergonomically curved. You also get a tough synthetic stock and forearm with tactile grip surfaces on both and an excellent skeletonized ventilated contoured recoil pad.

The barrel is 24” long while overall length is 45.625” and overall weight is 7.5 pounds. Atop the back-bored barrel is an arced-pylon vent rib. Above that, you get low-profile adjustable sights. The front sight is fiber optic while the rear sight is flip-up.

The front has a trusted Improved Cylinder (IC) Invector Plus extend choke tube. Below it, the extended magazine tube handles either eight 2 ¾” shells or seven 3” shells. Thus, capacity is either 8+1 or 7+1 respectively.

The gun’s gas system is an active-valve type that automatically adjusts to different loads. The loading port is bigger than on the standard SLP. Two steel sling swivel studs facilitate carrying while a crossbolt safety at the back of the trigger guard makes locking the gun easy.
