Gemtech History & Products

Gemtech manufactures silencers for pistols, rifles, submachine guns and personal defense weapons. The company was founded in 1993 by Dr. Phil Dater, one of the pioneers of modern firearm suppression. In 2011, Gemtech branched into ammunition and developed ammo compatible with their suppressors, including subsonic .22lr cartridges and both supersonic and subsonic .300 blackout cartridges.

Gemtech is currently used by United States servicemen and women stationed around the world, federal law enforcement, and local and state police. Gemtech helped form the American Silencer Association (ASA), a nonprofit organization that educates and advocates for the silencer industry.

About Silencers

Silencers reduce the amount of noise and muzzle flash when a firearm is fired. They typically resemble metal cylinders and attach to the barrel. Their internal mechanisms reduce the sound by slowing down the gas discharged upon firing.

The first silencer was made in 1902 by American inventor, Henry Percy Maxim, son of Hiram Stevens Maxim, who invented the first recoil-operated machine gun.

Is there a difference between “suppressor” and “silencer”? While both terms are correct, industry professionals prefer “suppressor” because a suppressor does not actually silence a firearm completely.
