The new for 2017 Howa APC Flag Chassis is two color schemes almost literally draped across the Howa 1500 bolt-action rifle components for 6.5 Creedmoor and .308 Win ammo. The Flag Chassis uses a rustic-effect American flag across the handguard, receiver and cheek. The stars are over the handguard’s front half while the stripes cover the back of the handguard, receiver and cheek rest, etc.

The Flag Chassis color schemes are Red, White and Blue or (the US flag in) Grayscale. Frankly, both look great and are attractive enough to use as showpieces that remain permanently affixed to a collector’s wall.

Regardless of size or color scheme, the gun has a nice looking M-LOK handguard that rounds the barrel. Moving back, all variants come standard with a Nikko Stirling Diamond LR 30mm 4-16x50 scope, scope rings and the EGW 20 MOA elevated scope base that bridges the ejector area. The scope is nitrogen-filled to prevent fogging. It’s also waterproof, shockproof, 14.5” long and weighs a pound.

The gun is available in 24” long heavy barrel threaded muzzle configuration that spans 44.5” to 47.5” long overall and weighs 12.3 pounds. This can be had both in both aforementioned color schemes for both 6.5 Creedmoor and .308 Win ammo. You can also buy the gun in the short 16.25” heavy barrel threaded muzzle for .308 Win. This shorter gun measures 36.75” to 39.75” and weighs 11.5. The only color scheme for it is Red, White and Blue.

The APC Flag Chassis’ bolt is a two-lug design made of forged steel with an integrated bolt arm. The receiver is also made of forged steel and the barrels are hammer forged. Near the base of the bolt arm is a three-position safety and a red-dot safety indicator.

The gun’s two-stage curved zero creep Howa Activated Controlled Trigger (HACT) has crisp, clean, breaks and is seemingly universal among the Howa rifles. All this sophistication combines to give the gun a sub-MOA rating. Thus, with factory or premium ammunition, it can shoot a group of three rounds within an inch at up to 100 yards.

Howa likes Luth-AR stocks. The Howa APC Flag Chassis is no exception. At back is a fully adjustable American-made Luth-AR MBA-3 buttstock. MBA stands for Modular Buttstock Assembly. The MBA-3 is a strong, lightweight and intricate piece of work with a six-position buffer tube that’s easily adjusted with a lever. It also has an adjustable comb and an adjustable length of pull. Both are unfastened/fastened using simple graspable twist knobs. The Luth-AR MBA-3 stock can stretch 4.25” between shortest to longest settings giving this Howa an impressive 12.5”-16.75” length-of-pull. This versatile buttstock has a built-in rail to attach a monopod, multiple sling attachment points, molded pockets for Grovtec QD cups, and it’s padded too!
