The new for 2018 Howa HS Precision is a beautifully elegant bolt-action rifle with shared Japanese and American roots. It takes Howa’s Made in Japan 1500-series bolt-action rifle components (barrels, actions, etc.) and marries them to namesake HS Precision stock made by H-S Precision of Rapid City, South Dakota. The result is a pleasing package.

There are 22”, 24” and 26” barrel lengths and plenty of caliber options: The 5+1 capacity 22” barrel guns weigh 7.6 pounds. These are the .223 Remington, .22-250 Remington, .243 Remington, 6.5 Creedmore, 7mm-08 Remington, .308 Winchester, .25-06 Remington, .270 Winchester, and .30-06 Springfield.

The heavier caliber 24” long Magnum barrel guns are 3+1 capacity and weigh 7.8 pounds choices are .300 Winchester Magnum and 7mm Remington Magnum.

There are also several models in a 26” long semi-heavy 1/2”x28 TPI threaded barrel with the same 13.25” LOP but measuring 45.5”. Between the length and barrel, there’s a nominal weight gain up to 8.1 pounds. These 26” guns come in 4+1 6mm Creedmore and 6.5mm Creedmore, 5+1 .308 Winchester and 3+1 for 7mm Remington Magnum and .300 Winchester Magnum.

All these guns enjoy a 13.25” length of pull (LOP). There are numerous calibers from which to choose in 22” and 24” barrel lengths that measure 41. 5” and 43. 5” respectively.

Now back to the HS Precision stock. “What’s so special about it?” one might wonder. Just this: H-S Precision makes its stocks using very advanced production techniques starting with 3D laser scans of the Howa components.

It then makes a CNC machined aluminum bedding block. The bedding block is set in a mold that’s then hand-laminated with carbon fiber, Kevlar and fiberglass. The result is injected with H-S Precision’s own dense polyurethane foam before being beautifully hand finished to artisan quality. This stock measures 31.0”, but still it only weighs 2.35 pounds.

The Howa 1500 series barrel, actions and other key components are mated to this stock.

The gun’s two-stage curved zero creep Howa Activated Controlled Trigger (HACT) has crisp, clean, breaks and is seemingly universal among the Howa 1500 series guns.

The bolt is a two-lug design made of forged steel with an integrated bolt arm. The receiver is also made of forged steel and the barrels are hammer forged. Near the base of the bolt arm is a three-position safety and a red-dot safety indicator.

The result of all this is improved accuracy rated to 1/2 MOA in .30 caliber and under and 1 MOA for calibers greater than 30 caliber.

Each caliber has three stock color choices: tan, green and grey. Regardless of color, the stocks are further marbleized with black. Regardless of color, the buttpad and optional Nikko Stirling scope (including rail and mounts) are black. Everything else (barrel, bolt, trigger guard, trigger, swivel studs) is either black or stainless!
