The Hudson Manufacturing H9 debuted in 2018 to great fanfare with several new patents, but then the company, based in Temple, Texas, went bankrupt, leaving behind a puzzled customer base wondering about spare parts, service and more. But what is the H9? It’s a 1911-style trigger, striker-fired, 9 mm x 19 Parabellum semi-automatic pistol with subdued yet fetching looks, modern styling and a threaded barrel.

Hudson’s founders and owners are husband and wife couple Cy and Lauren Hudson. Starting around 2012, they worked on designing the gun. It would have a low bore axis that wouldn’t require wrist rotation and would channel recoil along this axis straight back into the shooters hand and help reduce muzzle flip and mitigate felt recoil.

Such a low-bore design would also accelerate follow on shots making the gun compelling for speed shooters. That it was striker-fired (in lieu of hammer fired) simplified the profile, decreased the number of parts by roughly one-third and thus would theoretically make the gun more reliable.

The front and rear sights are black dovetailed Trijicon night sights. The slide itself is gently vaulted over the top while both the front and back of the slide have nice slide cocking serrations that parallel a forward bevel line and the grip’s rear. The H9 features ambidextrous slide release levers.

The gun is perhaps unusual that it has a steel chassis and black nitrided steel frame that’s several ounces lighter than its peers. In 2018, Hudson announced an H9A model that had an aluminum frame that was even lighter though it still retained the steel chassis.

In order to combine the 1911-style trigger with the low bore axis, etc., the gun’s recoil spring and steel rod are uniquely placed below the muzzle and in front of the trigger guard in a nice deep housing where you’d expect an accessory rail might be. The look is cohesive and integral to the frame’s design. And there’s still an integrated accessory rail below that almost at the level of the trigger guard’s ventral surface. At back is a medium beavertail. Ultimately, the design is integrated with nothing that looks frivolous.

The gun has an Integral trigger safety, and a short trigger pull and short reset.

The magazine release is elongated, while the grip is M1911A1- style, with grip indentations behind the trigger guard. It is flanked by tall and aggressive G10 polymer VZ Grips that are fastened top and bottom.

The Hudson H9 comes with a trio of double-stack magazines that hold 15-rounds and that have witness holes.
