Kimber America of Yonkers, New York largely built its reputation on its fine M1911 style pistols. The apex of them just might be the stunning new Kimber Rapide (DN, NS). This gun comes in 10 mm and .45 ACP and has an eight round flush mounted magazine.

The “DN, NS” stands for Day / Night, Night-Sights. So let’s talk about that. The sights are highly regarded TruGlo TFX Pro Day Night types with a high contrast orange focus ring circumscribed tritium vial green dot in front and two tritium vial green dots for the U-notch rear sight that work in all lighting conditions. The tritium sights actively glow constantly. The sights use no batteries, are made of steel and are wear and corrosion resistant.

Moving beyond the sights, the Rapide (DN, NS) is a beautiful piece of work. It’s also big and powerful, and as already mentioned, it’s chambered in 10 mm and .45 ACP. In either guise, it’s 8.7” long, 5.25” tall and weighs 38 ounces (2 pounds 6 ounces).

The black stainless steel slide has a Kim Pro II finish and a vaulted upper surface while each side has five prominent rear serrations, three not so prominent front ones and three lightening ports for faster slide movements.

Visible through the slide and looking like it’s made of bronze is the 5” long super-hard and durable titanium nitride (TiN) ceramic coated match competition barrel. Twist is 1 to 16”. Actually, initiating the firing is an aluminum trigger with a W-pattern trio of cuts to make it lighter and perform better.Trigger pull is factory set at 4.0 to 5.0 pounds and the trigger guard is curved with an attractive line that flows into the frame.

The new gray and black G10 polymer WavZ grips are grippy, attractive and tall, reaching up as they do almost to the slide. Meanwhile, both the front strap and back strap have gray stippling. The back strap ends in an extended beavertail.
