The new for 2019 Lithgow LA105 Woomera is a feature-rich bolt-action centerfire rifle from Down Under that’s available in 6.5 mm Creedmore and .308 Winchester calibers.

Australia’s Lithgow Arms is based in Lithgow, Australia, 90 miles west of Sydney. It started making guns in 1912 and has equipped Australian soldiers in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Thus, Lithgow’s guns are engineered from experience notched in a vast array of terrains and climates. The company is now a division of Thales Australia.

If the Woomera name sounds Aboriginal, that’s because it is. Woomera is a warrior’s wooden spear-launching device, and it’s also the name of Australia’s once secret weapons testing base.

The LA105 is optimized for competition. It’s built around an ultra-modern American KRG X-Ray hybrid aluminum and polymer chassis that includes the buttstock, forend and just about everything else below the barrel. This is KRG’s third generation chassis, and it’s thoroughly modern with seemingly everything one could want. We’ll return shortly to the X-Ray chassis.

Lithgow has its own proprietary heavy “Woomera” profile barrel design optimized for extreme long-range accuracy. The military grade steel barrel is cold hammer forged and Cerakoted for durability and wear-prevention. The muzzle is target crowned and 5/8”x24 TPI threaded. Fronting the barrel is an imposing 1.6” three chamber muzzle brake that drops felt recoil toward imperceptibility. The two calibers differ only that the 6.5 Creedmore has six grooves and a 1 to 8” RH twist while the .308 Winchester has four grooves and a 1 to 10” RH twist.

The 105 comes without sights, however, atop the gun is a factory-installed 20 MOA Picatinny rail designed for 1,000-yard accuracy.

The gun has a three-position bolt-mounted safety for FIRE, SAFE with bolt locked and SAFE with bolt unlocked. The bolt itself is a classic three-lug bolt with a familiar 60-degree throw. The bolt knob is spherical, but it’s also fluted for faster and better grips.

The LA105’s single-stage match-grade trigger is factory-set to 3.3 pounds of pressure. However, it is user adjustable from a feathery 1.65 pounds up to 4.2 pounds of pressure. It’s also adjustable for over-travel and sear engagement.

Let’s now return to the X-Ray chassis. It has thumb shelves on both sides of the pistol grip. Inside is an aluminum block bedding ensuring a stable, precision-fit for the Lithgow barrel. The forend has M-Lok and KRG accessory attachment points at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions.

Just ahead of the trigger guard is the large ambidextrous magazine lever release. It’s oversized for fast magazine swaps during timed competitions.

The KRG X-Ray chassis was designed for interchangeable grip panels and comes with large and small panels so you can get comfortable in matches.

Now, let’s move to the buttstock. It has asymmetric cheek riser that is, of course, height-adjustable with a 1” range, but interestingly, it can be configured for left or right-hand users. It comes with three butt spacers, each 1/3” long. Length of pull not counting the butt spacers is 12.90”.

Finally, using the KRG X-Ray chassis also means it’s compatible with other KRG components and AICS magazines.

Key dimensions are as follows. The barrel is 23.90” long. Overall weight is 10.78 pounds (10 pounds, 12.5 ounces) and of this 3.1 pounds is the X-Ray chassis. Total length not counting the muzzle brake or the butt spacers is 43.50”.

The gun comes with a double-stack, 10-round steel box magazine made for fast, reliable feeds.
