The 5+1 capacity Mossberg 500 Hunting All Purpose Field and Mossberg 500 Hunting All Purpose Field Classic are affordable, high-quality, feature-rich pump-action shotguns spanning 12-gauge, 20-gauge and .410 bore variants. There are currently five Mossberg 500 Hunting All Purpose Field production models and one Mossberg 500 Hunting All Purpose Field Classic model, all built around a common receiver and action that they share with all other Mossberg 500 models, of which there are almost 30. The series started production in 1962 and is one of the most successful shotguns in history.

That said, we can group the six All Purpose guns by their shared traits. For instance, all five have dual bead sights, vent ribs, a fixed 13.875" length of pull (LOP), nicely done forend and grip texturing and blued barrels.

Like the rest of Mossberg’s 500 “hunting” shotguns, this group features dual extractors. Break open the gun, and spent casings await easy removal. They have twin action bars. An anti-jam elevator gets you smooth operations time and time again. There is positive steel to steel lockup. The sliding red dot tang safety is ergonomically ideal and ambidextrous.

Their classic American stocks are backed by a very effective thick black “checkered” skeletonized recoil pad. There are also integrated sling swivel mounts at front on the magazine cap and molded in back on the stock’s bottom slope.

The Mossberg 500 Hunting All Purpose Field quintet comprises of a solitary .410 bore, two 12-gauge models and two 20-gauge models.

The .410 is the smallest of the bunch. It has a 24” barrel, a fixed full choke, 43.75” overall length and weighs just 6.25 pounds. The forend and stock are both walnut. Between the walnut and blued metal components, the look is classic and timeless.

The two 12-gauge models have 28” barrels, 47.5” overall lengths and weigh 7.5 pounds. One is all black with a synthetic forend and stock while the other has the walnut forend and stock. The two 20-gauge models feature 26” barrels. They have the same synthetic and walnut options. However, the wood gun is 45.5” long while the synthetic one is 45.25” long. All four come standard with a trio of Briley Accu-Set chokes: Skeet, Improved Cylinder and Modified. These chokes impress with their fluted flanks. They even come in their own carrying case.

The Mossberg 500 Hunting All Purpose Field Classic is a 12-gauge with a 28” barrel and walnut for the forend and stock. It bears the same general characteristics as the standard 12-gauge 28” barrel Mossberg 500 Hunting All Purpose Field with several very important tantalizing differences. For starters, the wood has a special gloss that is just stellar! But your eye will quickly notice the barrel also has a special high polish. The ejection port is stainless steel and then checkered buttpad in back is not black but a rich brown that compliments the stock’s color.

Capacity is either 6+1 (six in the tube and one in the chamber) for 2-3/4” shells or 5+1 for 3” shells.
