The O.F. Mossberg & Sons Mossberg 930 Slugster is part of Mossberg’s 930 Hunter 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun lineup. The 4+1 Slugster stands out from its many siblings with several characteristics that are externally visible and internally not so visible.

The gun is all matte black and built with a synthetic forend and synthetic stock. The matte blued stock complements these perfectly.

The Slugster has a fully rifled bore 24” length barrel and 44.5” overall length. Length of pull is 13.875”. Weight is 7.5 pounds. Unlike other 930s, this one eschews vent ribs and front fiber optic sights. Its other visible differences include a scope base and Monte Carlo stock.

The scope base is anchored to the rear of the barrel and is then cantilevered back over the receiver, like a long index finger pointing back at the shooter. The genius in mounting the base to the barrel is it makes it easy to do barrel swaps.

The stock has the Monte Carlo raised cheek rest profile for excellent cheek to gun alignment. Behind it is the thick black “checkered” recoil pad. It’s skeletonized and does a great job soaking up felt recoil. There are also integrated sling swivel mounts at front on the magazine cap and molded in back on the stock’s bottom slope.

All 930s feature drilled and tapped receivers so you can mount Picatinny rail for optics. The lineup’s synthetic forend and stock models have adjustable stock drop spacer system. These guns also have a dual gas-vent system that reduces felt recoil.

In all cases, you get a forend and stock with comfortable contours and excellent texturing on both parts exactly where you’d expect it and want it. Moving back, you’ll find the ambidextrous tang safety with the standard forward is safe and rearward is ready to fire. There’s also a silver cocking indicator that automatically protrudes when the gun is cocked. The indicator’s silvering makes it easy to see. At bottom is a quick-empty magazine release button. Push it and all loaded shells easily drop out.
