Breathtaking. The PTR lineup of roller-delayed blowback 7.62x51mm NATO semi-automatics is simply beautiful. And PTR makes almost all its components in its own plant in Aynor, South Carolina. PTR stands for Proven Technology, Trusted Manufacturing and Refined Engineering. The firm has made guns over 15 years and is rightfully proud of its roller-lock platform guns.

That said, these PTRs are also assembled in some cases with surplus parts interwoven with new cloned parts made by PTR’s sophisticated manufacturing processes. Thus, these guns are essentially H&K G3 clones assembled in the USA. The G3s were used for almost four decades by Germany’s Bundeswehr until finally phased out of frontline service in 1997.

The current lineup is ten 7.62x51mm PTRs. Barrel lengths are 8.5”, 12.5”, 16” or 18” with overall lengths of 23.5”, 28”, 38.5” and 40.5” respectively. These guns weigh 8.1 to 9.5 pounds. But here we’ll focus on the 18” long barrel GI PTR 100.

The PTR’s 18” barrel is tapered, threaded, .308 caliber (that also accepts 7.62x51mm) with a 1:10” twist ratio. Trigger pull is 9 to 10 pounds. The gun ships from PTR with either 10 or 20-round double stack straight box magazines. It has olive drab green polymer furniture. It accepts a claw mount or a carry handle.

These guns are Parkerized, and they use traditional iron sights. They use a perforated PTR-made Slimline Forearm that echoes the H&K G3 original. To this, it adds a good condition surplus German H&K G3 S-E-F marked lower receivers. The A2 polymer buttstock is backed by a thick, black, buttpad that is US 922R compliant. It has the classic strap loop integrated in the buttstock’s left side.

These guns famously use a roller-delayed blowback. This system is heavier, but smoother with a lower recoil than an AR-type gun.

Some of the guns of this series, such as the A3S PTR 109, are essentially the same except they use a two-firing position S-F (Safe-Fire) marked lower receiver made in-house by PTR. The A3S PTR 109 is also all-black in lieu of olive drab green.

Naturally, there are also California and New Jersey regulation-compliant versions of these guns.

They’re made by PTR in Aynor, South Carolina, and thus they are Made in USA.
