The breech-loading Remington Rolling Block Rifle single-shot was a big seller in its day. It was affordable, reliable and had mechanical integrity. It mated an American walnut forend and an American walnut straight stock to a forged steel receiver, steel barrel bands, etc. And there were plenty of caliber choices including 7mm, etc.

The gun’s roots start in 1863 mid-war during the US Civil War. This solid piece of work demands respect and admiration for its perfect connections through American history. It would be impossible to say who its most famous user was, but Buffalo Bill would be one candidate.

The Remington Rolling Block had many variants with different names or features, such as color casehardened receivers. But there were two primary standard variants: the Rolling Block Rifle and the Rolling Block Carbine. The Rolling Block Rifle had a splendid 30” barrel, 45” overall length and 9-pound weight. The Rolling Block Carbine had a 20.5” barrel, 36” overall length and weighed 7.25 pounds.

Both loading and ejection are in back through the breechblock port. The rolling block action was an evolution between the split breech action and the later bolt-action. The rolling block permitted opening the breech via a rotational movement, ejecting any spent casing, loading a new one, and then rotating (rolling) the breech back to lock it. It was fast, reliable, slick and secure. In many ways, it echoed on a very small-scale the breech block loading of the era’s new cannons.

The Remington Rolling Blocks feature a sliding ladder rear sight. Their straight stocks look great. The originals are prized collectors’ guns that for good reason often fetch a premium.
