The .45 ACP Rock River 1911 Poly PS6000 semi-automatic pistol is, as Rock River says, a modern twist on a timeless design. But beyond simply saying that, what’s different about it? We’ll get into that, but first, let’s go over what’s familiar.

The answer, at least at first glance, is nearly everything is familiar. The matte black barrel vault slide and frame look fairly standard. This Rock River Arms (RRA) .45 has a 5” long grooved chrome moly barrel with a 1 to 16” LH twist. The M1911 (actually M1911A1) type frame has frame recesses behind the trigger. The hammer is the usual skeleton loop Commander type. And below it is a beavertail grip safety. Both the straight front strap and mainspring housing have checkered grips.

The gun is set up for right-hand use with the beveled slide stop, curved thumb safety and circular magazine release all on the gun’s left.

So now here’s what is different. Let’s start at the steel slide. At back is an all-black Heinie sight that’s serrated at back and adjustable for windage. In front is a simple plain black sight. Next, let’s talk about weight-saving polymers.

Both the frame and the hatched mainspring housing are polymer, which, in concert with the non-wooden grips, aluminum trigger, etc., shaves an impressive amount of weight. In fact, the RRA 1911 Poly weighs just 2.04 pounds. The slide and frame both have a black Parkerized finish.

Other differences? The ejection port is cut down and beveled. The beavertail is long and upturned and the steel slide’s rear serrations are diagonal instead of vertical. The gun has a crisp, lightweight triple ported aluminum speed trigger that has vertical serrations and is designed for lightning fast shoots.

The 1911 Poly’s grips have the classic double-diamond cross hatched look and are appealingly fastened with flat head screws, but they are RRA Overmolded Grips instead of the original 1911’s wooden ones. On the center of each is the RRA rondel logo. Moreover, the mainspring housing is flat instead of being lightly contoured.

The RRA 1911 debuted in 2018 and comes with two 7-round single-stack magazines. Instead of counting holes, these have clever counting slots. These guns are made in Colona in western Illinois not far from the Mississippi River, so they are Made in USA.
