Rock River Arms CAR LAR-15M lineup includes the CAR A2, CAR A4, Tactical CAR A4 and Elite CAR A4. Each is 5.56mm NATO chambered for 5.56mm NATO and .223 Caliber. Each is a matte black 30+1 capacity semi-automatic AR-type built around a 16” chrome moly barrel.

RRA is more than an integrator. It’s a true manufacturer based in Colona, Illinois. Thus, many key components are made inhouse. Let’s visit each model in order of increasing sophistication.

The CAR A2 LAR-15M is the most traditional of the bunch. For starters, it’s almost all black. The upper receiver is a forged A2-type upper crested by carrying handle you might envision in a Vietnam War movie. The lower receiver is a forged RRA LAR-15M. There are then several more A2 components. The 16” chrome moly barrel gets a birdcage A2 flash hider with a 1/2"–28 TPI thread and an A2 front sight.

The gun has matte black textured RRA overmolded A2 knee and boot-type polymer grip. Moving down, is a flat trigger guard bridging the magwell to grip. Within is an RRA two-stage trigger.

In back you get a collapsible RRA 6-Position Tactical CAR stock. It’s lever-actuated and includes an integral non-slip textured buttpad. You get sling swivels at the heel and under the front sight. The CAR A2 weighs 7.5 pounds and measures 36” overall. The totality provides an impressive 1 MOA accuracy at 100 yards. The gun comes standard with a 30-round mag.

Second, the CAR A4. It is the same as the CAR A2 but has a forged A4-type upper receiver with no carrying handle but with a long MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail instead. There are two variants: one with the A2 front sight or one with a three-slot receiver height sight rail atop the gas block. The CAR A4 weighs 7.1 pounds.

Third, the Tactical CAR A4 is the same as the A2 front sight-equipped CAR A4 but with a slightly different 5.35-ounce double-heatshield R-4 handguard and a Hogue rubber grip with nice texturing and three demi-lune finger grooves instead of the A2 grip. The Tactical CAR A4 has two variants that differ only in the barrel. In other words, the standard barrel is not chrome-lined, while the other model has a chrome-lined barrel.

Fourth, the Elite CAR A4 uses a mid-length handguard encapsulating a mid-length gas system. It has the Hogue grip, A2 front sight, and weighs just 6.8 pounds. It also has chrome-lined and non-chrome-lined barrel variants.
