The Rock Island Armory Standard FS – 45 ACP, Standard FS2-Tone – 45 ACP and Standard FS Matte Nickel – 45 ACP are almost literally three shades of the same. The trio are all full-size 8+1 capacity .45 ACP that are part of RIA’s Rock lineup of Series 70 M1911 semi-automatics.

Overall height is 5.5” and overall length is 8.75". Unloaded weight is 2.5 pounds; this climbs to 2.87 pounds when the gun is loaded.

This semi is a single-stack, single-action, recoil-operated semi-automatic wrapped about a 5" length, button rifled barrel whose 6-grooves spiral inside the bore at an extended 1:16” twist ratio.

The full-size Rock Standard FS looks great and feels great. Except the barrel, it’s essentially all matte black. The Standard FS2-Tone is all matte black except, very importantly, the frame. The frame has a beautiful nickel finish. The Standard FS Matte Nickel swathes both frame and slide in nickel finishes.

Regardless of which Rock Standard FS you choose, you get a classic set of classic features. Note the visual perfection of the strong barrel vault over the slide and the tightly packed rear slide serrations in back. The frame, slide and other exposed parts are strong and hard high-grade SAE 4140 chromium-molybdenum alloy steel.

Sitting atop the barrel is a high-contrast red tube fiber optic front sight. In back is an LPA MPS1 type adjustable ramped rear sight RIA uses on many others in this series. It is cantilevered toward the back for an extended sight radius compared to older M1911-type standard sights. All else being equal, a longer sight radius leads to higher accuracy.

The grips are double diamond checkered matte black rubber. This means they have the up and down arrowhead shaped surrounds around the flat-head grip fastening screws and then a diamond texturing in between.

Otherwise, the gun shares many features with the rest of its Rock siblings. This means it gets a nicely upturned beavertail, skeletonized loop hammer, adjustable overtravel stop skeletonized trigger and fixed Parkerized dovetailed sights that are angled for snag-free unholstering.

The trigger is triple ported with stacked trapezoids and has an adjustable overtravel stop. Trigger pull is factory set to 4 to 6 pounds.

Rock Island Armory is a division of Armscor, which started in 1905 in the Philippines. Two Englishmen founded it as Squires Bingham & Company. The name changed to Armscor in the 1980s. That same decade, Armscor established US operations and acquired Rock Island Armory, famous for making M1911 semi-automatic pistols, etc. It set up its American headquarters at Pahrump, Nevada and later started making ammunition in Stevensville, Montana. Now Armscor is the world’s largest M1911 producer.
