The Rock Island Armory Rock Ultra CS-L 7+1 capacity .45 ACP inhabits RIA’s Rock lineup of Series 70 architecture M1911 semi-automatics. The CS means Compact Size and L means lightweight.

This little semi is a single-stack, single-action, recoil-operated semi-automatic wrapped around a 3.5" length, button rifled barrel whose 6-grooves spiral inside the bore at an extended 1:15.7” twist ratio.

This pistol conjoins many great details. To wit, it has many tightly packed rear slide serrations. The slide and other exposed parts are strong and hard high-grade SAE 4140 chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. The aluminum frame wears a black oxide finish while the slide is Parkerized (anodized for wear and corrosion resistance).

The front sight is a high-contrast red tube fiber optic. In back is an LPA MPS1 type adjustable rear sight. It is nicely cantilevered and ramped, giving you improved usability and a better sight radius, which leads to higher accuracy.

The grips are wonderfully wavy and nicely textured white to black grayscale G10 polymer tactical grips. G10 is noted for its light weight and durability.

Otherwise, the gun shares many features with the rest of its Rock siblings. This means it gets a nicely upturned beavertail, skeletonized loop hammer, adjustable overtravel stop skeletonized trigger and fixed Parkerized dovetailed sights that are angled for snag-free unholstering.

The trigger is beautiful, triple ported, and it has an adjustable overtravel stop. Trigger pull is factory set to 4 to 6 pounds. Overall height is 5.1", overall width is 1.3" and overall length is 7.1".

Rock Island Armory is a division of Armscor, which is short for Arms Corporation of the Philippines. It was founded in 1905 by two Englishmen as Squires Bingham & Company in the Philippines. The name changed to Armscor in the 1980s.

That same decade, Armscor set up operations in the United States and acquired Rock Island Armory, famous for making M1911 semi-automatic pistols. It set up its American headquarters at Pahrump, Nevada and later started making ammunition in Stevensville, Montana. Now Armscor revels in its position as the world’s largest producer of M1911 types.
