The Rock Island Armory Rock Ultra FS HC – 10mm 16+1 capacity is one of RIA’s Rock lineup of Series 70 M1911 semi-automatics. The FS means Full Size. HC indicates high capacity. Overall height is 5.5" and overall length is 8.75". Unloaded weight is 2.5 pounds.

But the real kicker is overall width is 1.42”. Increasing the grip width a mere eighth of an inch from 1.3" permitted RIA to expand the internal grip architecture to accept double-stack magazines and thus double capacity from 8+1 to the aforementioned 16+1. Remarkable, right?

This semi is a single-stack, single-action, recoil-operated semi-automatic wrapped around a 5" long 1:16” twist ratio, 6-groove button rifled barrel.

The frame wears a black oxide finish while the slide is Parkerized. The frame, slide and other exposed parts are strong and hard high-grade SAE 4140 chromium-molybdenum alloy steel.

The slide has classic M1911 looks and then some. The top is perfectly barrel vaulted with dovetail cuts for Parkerized (anodized for wear and corrosion resistance) dovetail sights that are angled for snag-free unholstering. Barrel vaulting makes for an incredibly strong structure, which is why it is there.

The gun’s front sight is a high-contrast red tube fiber optic, which your eye can’t miss helping assure that you won’t either. In back is an LPA MPS1 type adjustable rear sight. It is cantilevered and ramped, giving you improved usability and a better sight radius. All else being the same, a greater sight radius increases sighting stabilization and thus permits greater higher accuracy.

The rear also features tightly packed vertical slide serrations, a skeletonized loop hammer, nicely upturned beavertail, and an ambidextrous grip safety.

Moving down you get to the adjustable overtravel stop skeletonized trigger. The trigger is triple ported with stacked trapezoids and has an adjustable overtravel stop. RIA factory sets trigger pull to 4 to 6 pounds.

Finally, the G10 polymer tactical grips are stippled in front and diagonally textured in back. These grips stand out from the wavier grips you’ll see on the single-stack 8+1 Rock Island Armory Rock Ultra FS – 10mm. The G10’s light weight and durability make it a crowd-pleaser. But more than that, this showcases RIA’s understated aesthetic. Note how the top of the grips flow across the safety to the curved beavertail to make a nice shallow “S”.
