The all-matte black centerfire Ruger-57 semi-automatic pistol is big, capacious, good looking and chambered for 5.7x28 ammo. Ruger usually likes large lineups. But the Ruger-57 is just two models, the 20+1 capacity and its sister 10+1 Massachusetts-compliant version that is otherwise exactly the same as the 20+1.

Let’s do a top down tour.

The hardened alloy steel slide is 1.20” across, has a black oxide finish and accounts for the better part of the gun’s 8.65” overall length. It has a flat top, long and wide bevels on either side and then diagonal front and rear grip serrations. The flanks are cut back on either side in between front and rear grip serrations.

The slide top has a long open bathtub lightening port behind the front sight. The front sight is a tall dovetailed fiber optic. In back is a fully adjustable for windage and elevation serrated blackout rear sight. The slide is drilled and tapped for optional optics via an optic adapter plate. And, there’s a visual inspection port to see if there’s a chambered round.

The 8-groove alloy steel barrel is 4.94” long, has a 1:9” RH twist and gets a nice black nitride finish.

The frame is high-performance glass-filled nylon polymer. Under the muzzle is a generous five-slot Picatinny rail that’ll permit you to add almost any laser or other accessory you’d want there. Height comes to 5.60”. What’s surprising is even with these not so small dimensions, the gun’s weight is only 24.5 ounces or a few sheets above 1.5 pounds.

Beyond weight, etc., there’s plenty to appreciate. The gun has an ambidextrous 1911-style thumb safety. The magazine release isn’t ambidextrous, but it is reversible. Press it and magazines drop free. Whether you get the 20+1 or 10+1 flavor, the gun comes with a pair of durable steel mags.

The grip exterior has the classic inverted “Y” accent line(s) and nice texturing. The combo is pleasantly eye-catching and helps set the Ruger-57 from competitors.

The Ruger-57 features Ruger’s Secure Action system that combines a bladed safety trigger and a hammer catch that only releases the hammer when the clean-breaking trigger is pulled.

The gun has been designed with easy and safe tool-less takedown. Ruger-57 semi-automatics are made in Prescott, Arizona and are thus Made in USA.
