The Ruger 77 bolt-action rifle family has eye-popping “wow!” styling. The lineup includes the Ruger 77/17, Ruger 77/22, Ruger 77/357 and Ruger 77/44. Each has two or more variants giving you 13 choices in all.

Whichever you pick, you’ll get a single-piece 90° throw stainless-steel bolt that ends in a spherical knob, integrated scope mounts that are machined into the solid-steel receiver, ultra-precise rifled cold hammer-forged barrel and a black buttpad.

Having integral scope mounts eliminates the scope ring middleman found on other guns. This direct binding can mean a more rigid mounting to the gun. All feature 18.5” barrels, 13.5” length-of-pulls, 1/2"-28 TPI muzzle threads, 6-groove rifling and 38.5” overall lengths. They also have stainless-steel barrels, receivers, bolts, etc.,

There are three main stock materials and color schemes. First is the American walnut with blued barrel, which looks nice and elegant. Then there’s matte black synthetic that pairs very nicely with the stainless-steel metal parts. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there is something just a bit extra special in this combination. And third, but arguably best, is the Green Mountain coloring. It has marvelous color bands that when seen from the either side form topographical map-like contours. This stock has a different profile, and it weighs more than the standard stocks. The grip is not as detached from the butt as in a traditional stock profile. In all cases, the stock’s lines are elegant and harmonious, punctuated by sling swivel studs and front and back.

The Ruger 77/17s are 6+1 capacities and can be had in .17 Hornet and .17 WSM. They weigh about 7 pounds each for the Green Mountain stock and 5.7 for the American walnut stock.

The 6+1 capacity Ruger 77/22s and are available in .22 Hornet. They weigh about 7 pounds each for the Green Mountain stock and 6.5 pounds for the American walnut stock.

The Ruger 77/357s are for 357 Magnum (no surprise!), weigh 5.5 pounds and are 5+1 capacity. There are two models: one that is threaded and one that is not. In both cases, the only stock option is the matte black synthetic.

Finally, the Ruger 77/44s are 4+1 capacity for 44 Rem Mag and weigh around 5.2 pounds. Sadly, you can’t get the Green Mountain stock for the 77/44s, but you can get the black synthetic or American walnut, and then each of these you can get threaded or unthreaded.

These guns have three-position safeties for safe, fire and in between to lock the bolt to unload the gun. 77s feature rotary magazines that slam flush mount up into the rifles. Between features and options, there are good choices for anyone looking for these calibers.
