The Ruger American Rifle Hunter takes Ruger’s short action lineup and marries it to Magpul’s ergonomic Hunter stock. There are currently seven rifles in this array that span 16.10”, 18”, 20” and 22” barrels, 6.5 Creedmore and 308 Win calibers and different colors.

Naturally, these splendid bolt-actions share many traits. They have one-piece Picatinny accessory rails bridged over the receiver’s ejection port. They have the fairly common 3-lug bolt design, but Ruger went further by giving them 70-degree throws instead of the usual 60-degrees. This gives them additional clearance from scopes and more room for gloved hand usage. They also have dual cocking cams.

These guns have Ruger’s heavy-contour cold hammer forged barrel fronted by a Ruger Precision Rifle Hybrid Muzzle Brake. This big single-chamber brake vents blasts to the sides and mitigates felt recoil.

The gun’s crisp breaking Ruger Marksman Adjustable trigger has a user-adjustable pull weight range of 3 to 5 pounds. All this is great for accuracy.

A tang safety is in easy reach. Its visibility provides a redundant level of security.

The Made in USA reinforced polymer Magpul Hunter stock bears further investigation. It’s Type III anodized, long and sinewy, like a snake that swallowed a couple of boxes. The forend hits 2.3” in maximum width, but this decreases to 1.5” for the buttstock. The stock has a cast aluminum bedding block and a trio of M-LOK slots on either side of the forend and more on the bottom.

At the back of each is a very thick rubber buttpad optimized to minimize felt recoil. Moreover, these guns are drilled to accept sling swivel studs.

The Magpul bolt-action magazine well is designed to easily mate with the PMAG 5 7.62 AC magazines. The entire Hunter stock weighs 3.3 pounds, and it’s adjustable up to 2.0” of length of pull thanks to spacers and up to .75” in cheek height due to a small kit of varying height cheek risers. Total length of pull is 13.0” to 15.0”.

The 6.5 Creedmore comes in 18” (black barrel on green stock), 18” (Silver Cerakote barrel on black stock), 20” (black barrel with muzzle brake on black stock) and 22” (black barrel with muzzle brake on FDE stock).

The 308 Win lineup is similar but not an exact match. It comes in 16.10” (Silver Cerakote barrel on black stock), 20” (black barrel with muzzle brake on black stock), and 22” (black barrel with muzzle brake on FDE stock).

The 16.10” barrel gun measures 37.35” to 39.35” depending on length of pull and weighs 8.6 pounds. On the other end, the 22” barrel guns measure 43.25” to 45.25” and 9.3 pounds.

The Hunter lineup comes standard with a 5-round Magpul PMAG 5 7.62 AC magazine. Ruger American Rifle Hunters are Made in USA.
