The various Ruger Scout bolt-action rifles include 10+1 308 Winchester, 5+1 350 Legend and 4+1 Bushmaster models. These Rugers share the usual family traits of dependability and accuracy coupled with stellar good looks. There are currently half a dozen models all built around free-floated cold hammer forged barrels optimized for accuracy and durability.

Four are 308s. One is on a matte black stock with a 16.10” length stainless-steel barrel and knob. The next has the same dimensions but pairs a matte black barrel to a laminated wood stock. These measure

37.0" to 38.50" overall depending on how the spacers are utilized, which also impacts length-of-pull that ranges from 12.75” to 14.25”. They also weigh about 7.1 pounds, and they’re fronted by a 5/8"-24 TPI thread.

The thread mounts one of the included Ruger flash suppressors, typically made of steel with a durable black oxide finish that matches the gun barrels. The flash suppressor for the 308s has a tall, almost birdcage slotted design.

Then there are two more that use an 18.70” length barrel with the aforementioned laminated wood stock. One is right-handed and the other is left-handed. Thus, both bolt knob and ejection port are on the left.

The two additional models include the 4+1 450 Bushmaster. It uses a matte black 16.10” barrel on a nice wooden stock. This gun weighs 6.6 pounds and has a 11/16"-24 thread. The 450 Bushmaster’s flash suppressor is actually a hybrid muzzle brake. Its single chamber is followed by radial porting all around that’s designed to both reduce recoil and mitigate muzzle rise, producing faster follow-on shooting. It directs noise, etc., to the sides instead of back.

And finally, the 5+1 350 Legend 16.5” barrel mates a matte black barrel to a matte black synthetic stock. It enjoys a 1/2"-28 x 0.4 thread and weighs 6.3 pounds. Its .35 caliber hybrid muzzle brake is very similar to the 450’s except the thread and its fabrication from 4140 chrome molly steel. This Made in USA hybrid muzzle brake is 1.0” wide, 2.2" long and weighs 3.7 ounces.

Regardless of which model you get, Ruger machines these receivers to include an integrated scope base, which does wonders for stability and simplification. But Ruger put a lot more thought into the optics than just the integrated scope base. These Scouts feature a medium-length Picatinny rail that’s mounted well forward of the ejection port instead of bridging it. This is so owners can mount modern optics, etc.

The stocks are lightweight and synthetic. They feature integrated aluminum bedding blocks in front and aluminum pillars in back. This allows the free-floating barrel and precision placement of the receiver.

Furthermore, these guns have a high comb straight stock that pairs well with scopes. The guns have a non-glare protected blade sight in front coupled with an adjustable ghost ring aperture sight in back.

Additional features include a soft buttpad in back and sling swivel studs. The buttpad comes with three 1/2” spacers you can use singly or in combination to get the length-of-pull (LOP) fit that works best for you.

The magazine release is nicely placed just in front of the glass-reinforced nylon trigger guard so it falls perfectly to the ringer. Above it is the standard three-position safety and the one-piece stainless-steel bolt.

These guns feature a non-rotating, Mauser-style round feed extractor. It is reliable and has a fixed blade-type ejector to ejects emptied brass cases. They also feature sling swivel studs in front and back.
