The History of Ruger
Founded in 1949 by William B. Ruger and Alexander McCormick Sturm in 1949, Ruger’s (full name: Sturm, Ruger & Company) roots reside in a tiny rented machine shop in Southport, Connecticut. When Ruger began to design his first pistol, he adapted design elements from the German 9mm Luger and the American Colt Woodsman. The Ruger 22 caliber pistol became the flagship firearm for the company. Ruger now manufactures over 400 variations of 30 product lines for hunters, competition shooters, law enforcement, self-defense enthusiasts, and collectors.
Ruger Rifles
Ruger has become one of the most dominant forces in the 22 LR rifle market due to its massive sales of the Ruger 10/22 semi-automatic rifle. The 10/22 rifle is inexpensive yet is produced at premium standards for quality. The popularity of this rifle has spawned a vast market of 10/22 accessories and parts. Ruger also manufactures the Ruger No. 1, a single-shot falling block rifle, and the Ruger SR-556, a semi-automatic carbine which marked Ruger’s entrance into the AR15 market.
Ruger Pistols
Just as with their presence in the rifle market, the Ruger MK II and the Ruger MK III have a large share of the 22 rimfire semi-automatic pistol market. Just like with the 10/22 rifle, the Ruger pistols are supported by a large inventory of accessories and parts. Other popular Ruger pistols include the Blackhawk and Super Blackhawk single-action revolvers, and both the Redhawk and Super Redhawk double-action revolvers.
Ruger Awards
Over the years, Ruger has been awarded a variety of awards from the Shooting Industry Academy of Excellence including back-to-back Manufacturer of the Year (1992 & 1993). Ruger has also produced several winners of the “Handgun of the Year” award including the Ruger Super Redhawk (2001), and the Ruger LCR (2009). Continuing with their line of excellent firearm, the Ruger 22 Magnum 10-22 rifle (1999) and the Ruger 17 HMR rifle (2002) have both received the “Rifle of the Year” award.
