The Savage A17 is the first semi-automatic rimfire designed right from conception for the fast flat-trajectory 17 HMR cartridge. This gun’s button-rifled barrel is 22” in length and made of high luster carbon steel. Except the gauge, this gun is visually and materially almost the same as its 22 LR chambered Savage A22 stablemate.
So what are some specific similarities? For starters, both the Savage A17 and Savage A22 are semi-automatic rifles, weight 5.6 pounds and are similar in mission. The A17 and A22 are 41.5” and 41” long respectively and have synthetic matte black sporter stocks, carbon steel receivers and high luster finishes. Both guns feature fore and rear sling studs for comfortable carry.
What are some of the trade-offs for these guns? Helping to keep prices low, both the A17 and A22 lack Savage’s AccuStock and AccuFit components that feature prominently on the Savage 110, Savage 212, Savage 220 and other more expensive Savage guns. AccuStock and AccuFit permit easy removal of the gun barrel and precise configuration of the butt stock for optimal cheek and shoulder fit respectfully.
An excellent selling point to many purchasers is that this pair features Savage’s AccuTrigger. AccuTrigger gives the gun owner the ability to adjust the trigger to his or her ideal pull. AccuTrigger also improves safety by preventing the rifle from discharging when jarred or dropped.
The Savage A17 comes with a 10 round rotary magazine as do other Savage guns such as the Savage A22, and the bolt-action Savage B17 FV-SR Overwatch and Savage B22 FV-SR Overwatch. Most people like these magazines, though some have complained that they aren’t always as flawless as they would like.
The A17 has a lot of twist, with a 1 in 9 ratio imparting an excellent amount of stabilization to departing rounds. The A22 has a 1 in 16 ratio. Another difference between the two near twins is the A17 has a delayed-blowback action while the A22’s is a straight-blowback action.
The A17 has several variants. For instance, the A17 XP variant comes with a Bushnell 3.5-10x 36mm scope optimized for its host, but it is otherwise the same as the standard Savage A17. In 2016, the NRA named the Savage A17 its Rifle of the Year.
