The Savage MSR 15 is an impressive next generation semi-automatic update of the AR platform that evokes the US Army’s 5.56 mm M4. MSR stands for Modern Savage Rifle. The series includes the MSR 10 lineup and the family of MSR 15s too. Here we focus on the MSR 15 Recon.

The MSR 15 Recon comes only in one caliber, and that’s .223 REM. It fire rounds through a matte black heavy barrel that is 16.125” long, made of carbon steel and has a Melonite QPQ finish. The barrel is 5R rifled, and has a 1 in 8” twist. It is enshrouded in a free-float M-LOK handguard permitting easy attachment of various M-LOK type accessories.

The gun comes without sights, but a full length Picatinny rail runs along the top of the handguard and upper receiver.

The gun’s forged receiver is matte black and made of the aviation industry’s lightweight 7075-T6 aluminum alloy. The stock is a matte black pistol grip polymer design. Fronting the barrel is a flash suppressor. Bringing up the rear, the empty triangle Magpul buttstock is adjustable up to 3.25” in length.

The gun’s trigger is unusual. It’s nickel-boron coated, which makes it both extremely durable while simultaneously being very smooth and almost without friction, and it works in conjunction with an adjustable mid-length gas system that permits optimizing performance for different types of ammo. This firearm has a curved 30 round detachable magazine.
