The overall impression of the Savage MSR semi-automatic rifle is one of length and modern high-technology. This is hardly surprising as MSR stands for Modern Savage Rifle. That said, this is not one gun but, as of this writing, a series of 12 that vary in things like barrel, shrouding/stock, coloring/camouflage, muzzle brakes, sights, grip and magazine.

Of these, one of the newest is the upscale MSR 10 Competition HD chambered for .308 Winchester ammo. Let’s focus on that.

The long thin matte black handguard is a fenestrated M-LOK type. Its dorsal surface has a long Picatinny integral rail for mounting scopes, etc. The handguard is light, but strong and aggressive looking.

The 18” long carbon-fiber wrapped stainless steel barrel has a 1 to 10 twist with 5R rifling and also has a Type 3 Hard Anodized outer protective layer.

Ahead of the muzzle is an adjustable ported muzzle brake to mitigate recoil and make it easier to re-lay the gun for faster follow on shots. The internal custom-length gas block can be manually adjusted for different shot weights and to use with a suppressor.

The upper and lower receiver are both custom forged from 7075 aluminum zinc alloy developed by Japan for the Imperial Japanese Navy’s World War II aircraft. The synthetic stock is matte black.

The MSR 10 has a non-reciprocating side charging handle, two-stage trigger and a pistol grip sourced from Hogue in Nevada.

With right-hand and left-hand use in mind, the Savage MSR has a red ambidextrous selector and an ambidextrous magazine release, and for portability, this gun has a QD mount receiver end plate.

The gun comes standard with a black triangular frame CTR buttstock by Magpul, based in Texas. At back is a flexible skeleton butt strip.

The 20 round box magazine is matte black while the removable polymer magwell is fire-engine red.

Overall length is 37.1” to 40.3”, and the gun weighs 9.05 pounds.
