With stock matte colors such as yellow, blue, red, green, pink and orange (and also matte black), the diminutive Savage Rascal bolt-action .22 gauge rimfire rifle looks a bit like a kid’s toy, but it’s decidedly not. Savage’s brilliance is that it has created a children’s starter rifle designed from the ground up as such. So rather than take an adult rifle and use a smaller barrel on a heavier stock with a long pull, etc., that’s still awkward for a child to use, it developed a rifle with kids in mind.

So what does this mean? Above all, it means the gun is smaller in size and much lighter in weight than its adult counterparts. The Rascal uses a 16” barrel, which keeps overall length down to just 30.625”.

Unlike some other Savage rifles, the Rascal’s styling is kid friendly. It even comes with stickers depicting Rascal, the gun’s mascot. Also there’s nothing aggressive about this rifle’s styling other than the fact that it is, of course, a gun.

The pull is short, and thus just right for little hands. Moreover, with safety in mind, the Savage allows unloading without pulling the trigger.

Best of all, at 2.7 pounds, Savage’s Rascal weighs in at about half the weight of a comparable adult rifle. The weight savings comes largely from the synthetic stock. Yes, it’s the same synthetic stock that permits all the fun colors. It’s smaller, shorter and narrower than its adult counterparts.

Though the Savage Rascal is an entry-level gun, perhaps surprisingly it still handles a wide variety of ammo including high velocity bullets.

Keeping costs down, this rifle comes with low-tech adjustable aperture sights (aka peep sights). Essentially, this means a little shallow black tube at the back that aids the gun’s user focus on the target by helping limiting potential distractions. This proven methodology was standard fare on military guns (including the M-16) for over a century.

Also with cost containment in mind, the Rascal lacks Savage’s AccuStock and AccuFit components that permit easy removal of the gun barrel and precise configuration of the butt stock for optimal cheek and shoulder fit respectfully.

However, the Rascal does include Savage’s AccuTrigger. The AccuTrigger system gives the gun owner the ability to adjust the trigger to his or her ideal pull which can be especially helpful for kids. Morever, AccuTrigger also prevents the rifle from discharging when jarred or dropped.

The Rascal features fore and rear sling studs in case your little one wants to carry his or her gun into the woods for hunting.

While the gun is drilled and tapped for a scope, it’s likely the scope will sit at a point that’s a little above optimal for children. Moreover, while the Rascal is designed as a starter gun at a starter price, it’s a bit pricier than comparable adult rifles. No doubt, this is due to the economies of scale in the adult guns that aren’t happening in the Rascal.

In the end though, this is a great starter rifle for kids who want to shoot real guns. And like all other Savage guns, this one is Made in USA.
