The upscale SIG Sauer MPX Copperhead is the smallest of SIG’s MPX line of compact braced semi-automatic submachine gun style pistols. The most obvious feature is its ultra-compact length, but the 9 mm Copperhead is also narrower and shorter in height than other MPX series guns.

The net of it is a gun barely larger or heavier than a standard full-size pistol, but with the included brace and curved magazine, it adds accuracy and more firepower even as it can be carried around in seemingly any size bag, glove box, etc.

So why the name “Copperhead”? This ultra-compact gun is called Copperhead because SIG Sauer likes to name guns after snakes and due to the tan color of its Cerakote finish. Perhaps unsaid is that it can strike fast.

With a carbon steel barrel that is only 3.5” long, it’s hard to imagine accuracy could be possible. But indeed, owners swear by its accuracy. The muzzle has an integrated flash hider. Other key dimensions? Weight: 4.5 pounds. Overall length: 14.5” without the brace and 19” with it. Height: 8”. Width: 2.4”. It also has a 1 to 10 twist rate.

Rather than use a blowback mechanism, the Copperhead uses a gas piston for operations, and there is little recoil.

The Copperhead has SIG Sauer’s Pivoting Contour Brace (PCB). It’s hard plastic for rigidity and accuracy. It can be swiveled to maximize comfort or rapidly folded forward 180 degrees completely for transport or storage. But the gun also has stock release button permitting swaps with selected other compatible braces.

Lefties will be delighted to know the SIG Sauer MPX Copperhead is a fully ambidextrous gun. The bolt release, selector switch, magazine release and charging handle are all dual-sided. The upper receiver is also crowned by a long Picatinny attachment MIL-STD-1913 accessory rail for scopes, etc.

The SIG Sauer MPX Copperhead has two models: the 10 round magazine PMPX-3B-CH-CO and the otherwise identical 20 round magazine PMPX-3B-CH.

All in all, the SIG Sauer MPX Copperhead is an excellent gun that provides tremendous versatility, accuracy and firepower for its compact size and weight.

As an aside, SIG Sauer’s roots go back to Switzerland in 1853. At that time, it made railway wagons, but in 1860, it started making arms for the Swiss Army. The company named changed to Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft (meaning Swiss Industrial Company), abbreviated to SIG. A 1976 purchase of Germany’s J. P. Sauer and Sohn led to the current name SIG Sauer. The American subsidiary was established in 1985. It is here that all new American-market SIG Sauer guns are designed and manufactured.
