The 15+1 SIG Sauer P229 Legion Compact SAO (Single Action Only) 9 mm pistol was introduced in mid-2018. This is an upscale, durable, all-metal gun.

The P229 has an ultrathin Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) covered stainless steel slide, PVD covered alloy frame and a carbon steel barrel. For the P229, SIG Sauer calls the finish Elite Legion Gray.

The slide has elegant, minimalistic and functional diagonal grips at front and rear. Under the muzzle is a short accessory rail for lights, laser sights, etc.

This gun and all SIG Sauer Legion pistols come standard with X-RAY3 daytime/nighttime sights instead of simple sight posts or blades. The front sight is a green tritium lamp inside a green luminescent circle while the rear site has green tritium inside of white luminescent circles. These daytime/nighttime gunsights permit SIG Sauers to be used under a variety of lighting conditions. However, these sights, particularly the front one, might not be as bright as one might hope during daytime usage.

The X-RAY3 daytime/nighttime sights could normally be expensive after-market parts, but they come standard integrated with the SIG Sauer P229 Legion Compact SAO and give it a high-tech feel. Note: the square-notch rear sight is horizontally serrated to help block reflections.

The SIG Sauer Master Shop flat trigger is an SRT (short reset trigger) type, so firing this gray single action semi-automatic is ultra-precise, easy and fast. The concave trigger guard has serrated edging for better grip and enhanced tactile feel. And there’s a manual safety on both sides. On the back of the gun is a contoured beavertail for firing comfort.

The G-10 advanced polymer high checkered pistol grips provide excellent tactile feel. The gun itself also has a very nice feel and heft along with superb timeless styling that is purposeful and efficient.

Key dimensions include its 7.1” length, short 5.5” height and 3.9” barrel. Weight, including the magazine, is just two pounds. The gun has two models. One comes with three 15 round magazines while the other comes with three 10 round magazines, but they are otherwise exactly the same.

It’s worth noting that some users have raised concerns about premature wear of the PVD coatings as well as problems with the front tritium sight losing its luminescence.
