The Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 Sport rifles are a family of polymer frame AR-15 platform blow-back semi-automatics built around the affordable 22 LR caliber barrel. In some cases, they are mated to Magpul components.

The entire range of 11 models (at least as of 2020) shares the same key technical characteristics. These polymer frame guns are matte black and given S&W’s own Armornite nitride finish that combats wear and enhances durability.

All M&P 15-22s have a 22 LR carbon steel barrel that’s 16.5” long with a 1 to 15” twist and a conventional 6 groove profile. Naturally, they have a carbine-length gas system, a shell deflector and more. Except where noted below, overall length is fairly compact at 30.7”.

All come with a 10” long M&P Slim Handguard lined with M-LOK attachment points and a small 2” long Picatinny attachment rail to fasten to the handguard. The polymer frame keeps weight incredibly low. Depending on configuration, it runs from 4.59 pounds to 5.22 pounds.

Next let’s note how M&P 15-22s vary. The 11 models mix and match several traits: magazine capacities, barrel threading, sights, color scheme/camouflage, grips and stock types.

There are three stocks: the standard fixed stock, its six-position adjustable fraternal twin and finally an upgraded six-position adjustable stock specifically by Magpul. The latter is the boot-shaped Magpul MOE SL (slim line) stock. It has dual slide release handles and an extra oval slot. The boot design helps keep the handles anti-snag. This configuration is mated with the slim profile Magpul MOE SL grip. It’s more vertical than other grips, heavily texturized all around and beavertailed.

The Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 Sport rifles come in several color/camouflage configurations. Naturally, several are matte black and one is field dark earth (FDE). So that accounts for eight models. There are three outliers: desert Kryptek Highlander, black and purple Muddy Girl and, finally, Robin’s Egg Blue Platinum.

Eight come standard with folding Magpul MBUS (back up/flip up spring-loaded) sights. They’re made of injection-molded polymer, keeping weight down while maintaining strength and impact resistance. The Magpul MBUS rear sight is dual aperture and can be adjusted for windage. The other three models lack sights, but are, of course, optics ready and measure 31.6” in overall length.

Most of the guns have threaded barrels and a simple A2 birdcage flash suppressor.

Three models have the MP-100 M&P Red/Green Dot Optic. It’s an affordable tube construction scope that’s adjustable for windage and elevation. It’s has a 4.0 MOA variable intensity and anchors to the gun’s M1913 Picatinny rail.

The Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 Sport rifles come with either 10-round or 25-round magazines.
