The AR-10-type Smith & Wesson M&P 10 is a versatile.308 Winchester / 7.62x51 NATO semi-automatic rifle. M&P stands for Military and Police. According to Smith & Wesson, this gun is the world’s first M&P .308, and is designed for both short-range and, with its heavier ammo, long-range use. Guns such as these were indeed first developed for military and police use, but they have civilian versions as well.

The M&P 10 platform is powered by a mid-length gas system. It is accessory rich and very modular, making it fairly easy configure to one’s exact liking.

Here is some technical data. The Type III hard anodized receiver is made of aerospace industry 7075-T6 aluminum. The gun comes without sights, but it has a long Picatinny rail across the top of the receiver.

An A4 handguard hangars the barrel. Just in front of the handguard is the gas block. It’s cleverly topped by a short two-slot Picatinny rail. The base version lacks a threaded muzzle.

The bolt is made of 9310 nickel chrome molybdenum steel alloy. The 18” barrel has 5R rifling and a 1 to 10” twist. It’s made of 4140 chromium molybdenum steel alloy and has a durable corrosion resistant Armonite finish inside and out. Overall length comes to 37.5” and total weight is 8.1 pounds.

Trigger pull is 6.15 pounds. The pistol grip is straight legged except that it has one finger recess just below the trigger guard.

At back is a non-adjustable Magpul MOE rifle stock. It has front and rear QD mounts and an integrated sling loop. It ends in a rubberized butt pad that hides the stock’s internal storage compartment.

The gun comes with a splendid raft of ambidextrous features, namely the bolt release, safety selector level, and magazine release. Beyond the aforementioned 5-round camouflaged standard gun, the gun has four Smith & Wesson M&P 10 models. The other versions trade camouflage for matte black finishes.

The first of these four has a 10-round magazine and a fixed triangular tactical CAR stock. The other three have threaded barrels and an adjustable six-position triangular tactical CAR stock. Of these, the M&P 10 Sport has a 16” short barrel, a 20-round magazine and an A2 birdcage flash suppressor. It weighs 8.0 pounds.

Finally, the two police versions of the gun differ in several key ways. They have an S&W extended birdcage flash suppressor, a lightweight thin profile barrel, and the adjustable six-position triangular tactical CAR stock. Total length grows to 40.9”, but total weight drops to 7.7 pounds. They differ from one another only in that one has a 10-round while the other has a 20-round magazine.
