Smith and Wesson’s Model 629 Deluxe is a 6-round 44 Magnum/44 S&W Special stainless-steel revolver with wooden grips that’s currently available in 3.0” and 6.5” length barrels. The standard Model 629 has synthetic grips, but the Model 629 Deluxe has upgraded wooden ones instead.

The 629 has been production for several decades, but its roots go back to 1959’s S&W Model 29 Revolver. The 29 had a blued carbon steel barrel, frame and cylinder. Then 20 years later, Smith and Wesson launched the 629 as a tweak of the 29’s successful formula by using a stainless-steel barrel, frame and cylinder instead.

The gun is big and is part of Smith and Wesson’s large N frame lineup. In 6.5” length guise, for instance, the 629’s overall length is 11.6” and weight is a wrist building 51.2 ounces.

This single/double-action square butt revolver is a craftsman’s work of beauty. The stainless steel would probably be fetching with any kind of grip. But the fact that the 629 Deluxe has lush, wooden grips with feathered side hatching and supplemental texturing further down makes for good grip and for an eye-catching collectible. Atop the grip at trigger height is the Smith and Wesson logo etched in wood.

Affixed to the barrel are a pinned red ramp front sight and an adjustable white outline rear sight.

The Smith and Wesson’s Model 629 Deluxe is made probably where most Smith and Wesson fans would expect: in Springfield, Massachusetts.
