The large-size rimfire Smith & Wesson Model 629 is a Classic Series stainless-steel 6-round .44 Magnum/.44 Special revolver. This single-action/double-action (SA/DA) gun is a version of the classic blued Model 29 that debuted in 1955 that was the world’s most powerful handgun at the time.

The Model 629 has five different barrel lengths and three grip styles. Let’s examine them:

The smallest one is the 629 Deluxe with the 3.0” length barrel. This beauty has a stainless-steel frame, stainless-steel barrel and stainless-steel fluted cylinder. The grip has a beautiful grain, the famed Smith & Wesson logo, diamond texturing, three finger recesses and a nicely curved butt. In front, you’ve got a nicely visible red dot ramp front sight pinned atop the integral sight base. In back is an adjustable rectangular-notched white outline sight. This gun is 8.625” long overall and weighs 39.6 ounces.

There are several other versions you can get. They are the same as above except as follows.

The Model 629 Classic has a 4.125” length barrel, 9.63” overall length and 41.5-ounce weight. The difference between a Classic model and the Deluxe is this has a black synthetic grip with oval texturing and mild indents for the finger recesses, and it has the Smith & Wesson logo embossed (in black) on either side. The grip’s butt is gently curved along the bottom.

Next up is the 5.0” barrel 629 Classic. It is the same as above except the barrel length, 10.5” overall length and .44.7-ounce weight. The 6.0” barrel 629 Classic is the same as above except its barrel length, 11.63” overall length and 45.0-ounce weight.

Finally, last, but definitely not least, is the 6.5” barrel Model 629. You can acquire it with either wood (629 Deluxe) or black grips (629 Classic). With black grips, the total length is 12.0” and weight is 48.4 ounces. The wood grip differs from the first model described above as it has a square butt and diamond checkering in a shield surround. The grain is beautiful, and the S&W logo is at the top of the grip. The grip is curved more sharply than the black synthetic one, so overall length is only 11.65” but wood being often heavier than synthetic, weight is 50.7 ounces.

Also the gun has a classic style thumbpiece, a color case hardened hammer and a color case hardened trigger! The hammer spur is horizontally grooved with light serrations, and the gun has a hammer block safety.

The Model 629 is one of Smith & Wesson’s Large N-frames. These frames started over 100 years ago. The swing out cylinder Model 629 has been produced since 1979. That’s heritage! The large Smith & Wesson Model 629 6-round .44 Magnum/.44 Special revolver is made in Springfield, Massachusetts.
