The History of Smith & Wesson
The Smith and Wesson legacy began in 1852 when Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson formed the company in Norwich, Connecticut. Smith and Wesson initially made their name by making improvements to the Volition Repeating Rifle and developing their Smith and Wesson Lever pistol. When Samuel Colt's original patent for the revolver was nearing expiration in 1856, they set about developing a new prototype that would compete with this. Not only did they succeed in making a new revolver, but, with the outbreak of the American Civil War in the 1860s, their name became famous and their guns widespread.
More than 1 1/2 centuries later, Smith and Wesson is still a firearms leader and relied on by militaries, law enforcement agencies and civilians all over the globe. Their guns also appear regularly on the sets of Hollywood movies, including the iconic Smith and Wesson Model 29 revolver that Clint Eastwood sports as the title character of "Dirty Harry." Popular Smith and Wesson models include the Smith and Wesson 500 and Smith and Wesson M&P.
