The Springfield Armory 1911 EMP 9mm semi-autos are a lineup of models in stainless-steel, black and FDE color schemes. EMP is short for Enhanced Micro Pistol. These feature-rich 1911s are imposing, impressive and practical for target work, self-defense and more emphasizing lightweight attributes such as an aluminum frame, loop hammers and radial ported triggers. And they’re good looking with beautiful grips, upturned beavertails, etc.

All feature three single-stack magazines and forged barrels, slides and frames. Forging makes for better quality and durability over casting that’s used by some other companies.

The series has three different body styles labeled 1911 EMP, 1911 EMP Champion and 1911 EMP Champion Concealed Carry Contour. The first one is the smallest. Let’s cover it and then the others in order.

The 1911 EMP has a stainless slide and a black frame. (You can also get it with a black slide on a black frame.) It builds around a 3” long stainless-steel 1:16 twist ratio match grade forged bull barrel that has a fully supported ramp. Height is 5” and length is 6.6”. The gun weighs 27 ounces. The frame is black hard coat anodized. On top you get no-snag, low-profile 3-dot combat sights with Tritium inserts for day or night use.

The 1911 EMP’s slide features forward leaning grip serrations in back and a clean slide in front. In back is a loop hammer, ambidextrous thumb safety and below that a grip safety.

The circular ported curved trigger is a lovely piece of metal that also has vertical serrations along its concave face. The grips are splendid Cocobolo tropical hardwood with beautifully done diamond hatching and the famed “double arrow” flat head screw surrounds at top and bottom. Each enjoys Springfield’s famous crossed cannon rondel at center. You’ll see the same insignia etched into the slide flanks. This model uses a trio of steel 9-round magazines.

Stepping up in size is the 1911 EMP Champion. It looks exactly like what it is: the 1911 EMP’s big brother. Thus, it has the same color scheme and very similar traits. Where it differs is it has a longer 4” barrel, 5.5” height and 7.6” overall length. Weight grows too, of course, and reaches 31 ounces in the EMP Champion. It comes with three 10-round magazines and has aggressive Posi-Lock checkering on the grip front. The only other difference is in the sights. This one has a front fiber optic sight and a low-profile ramped combat white dot sight in back.

The 1911 EMP Champion Concealed has the 1911 EMP Champion’s dimensions but with a rounded rear butt limiting it to 9-round magazines. It comes with three mags. The grips are different too with thin-line G10 polymer grips instead of the cocobolos. The EMP Champion Concealed has two models: stainless-steel slide on a black frame or field dark earth (FDE) on an FDE frame combination.

The Springfield Armory 1911 EMP series is Made in USA at the company’s Geneseo, Illinois location.
