Calling the full-size .45 ACP Springfield Armory 1911 MIL-SPEC “Defend Your Legacy” is entry-level is misleading. Affordable, yes. But this is a gun you can use out of the box to meet many needs, whether a day at the target range or self-defense or…

This 1911 looks like the classic 1911s, or to be precise, it looks like 1911-A1 models. These took the original 1911s and added several enhancements such as a lowered and beveled ejection port and finger recesses atop the grip and behind the trigger.

The dimensions are probably about what you’d expect around a 5” barrel with a 1:16” twist ratio. Thus, length is 8.6”, height 5.5” and weight is 39 ounces.

Springfield Armory uses a strong forged slide and a forged frame for amazing quality. In contrast, other companies often cast theirs. Forging gives these guns a durability advantage. The slide features fixed steel 3-dot (white dot) sights.

The grips look like G10 polymer grips. But they are more authentic and lovely Cocobolo tropical hardwood with beautifully done diamond hatching and the famed “double arrow” flat head screw surrounds at top and bottom. Each is punctuated with Springfield’s famous crossed cannon rondel at center. You’ll see the same insignia etched into the slide flanks.

Speaking of slides, the slide rear has forward leaning grip serrations. Behind it, you’ve got a classic spurred hammer, left side only thumb safety at back and below that a grip safety. The curved trigger also has parallel groove vertical serrations.

The gun revels in details. Housed under the barrel-vaulted slide is a 5” long match-grade barrel. Yes, even this appealing “entry” 1911 has a match-grade barrel. The mainspring housing is vertically serrated and arched filling your palm nicely and keeping it in place when you do fire it.

This 1911 is offered in four SKUs. Two are the standard models and represent two finishes: Parkerized black and a slightly more expensive stainless-steel variant. You also have the same two in California-compliant offerings. The difference is simple. The standard guns each has two 7-round magazines while the California-compliant guns come with just one 7-round mag.

The Springfield Armory 1911 MIL-SPEC is Made in USA at the company’s Geneseo, Illinois location.
