The Springfield Armory EMP (Enhanced Micro Pistol) Black is a 9-round 9 mm M1911 style semi-automatic pistol in a smaller, compact, yet very capable package.

Let’s look at some key dimensions and how they measure up to Springfield Armory’s own Mil-Spec M1911. The Springfield Armory EMP Black’s dimensions are barrel: 3”, height: 5”, length: 6.6” and weight: 27 ounces. The Mil-Spec M1911 compares with barrel: 5”, height: 5.5”, length: 8.6” and weight: 39 ounces. Thus though height is similar, the length is 2” shorter and weight drops 30 percent.

This is not a light gun for its size. That’s because this is not a polymer frame but one forged out of tough aluminum alloy and then black hardcoat anodized for durability and corrosion resistance.

The slide is forged carbon steel that has an ultra-thin Black T coating optimized for durability and corrosion.

Atop the perfectly barrel-vaulted slide are low profile dovetail sights. In front is a red fiber optic type while at back is a twin white dot rear sight. The front lacks grip serrations, but the back has plenty. They are diagonal, so they echo the angle of the grip below. Nearby are the delta (loop) hammer and upturned beavertail.

Fit and finish are beautiful as befits something in this price range. The match grade barrel is a high quality bull profile, forged of stainless steel that’s fed via a fully supported ramp. It has the 9 mm’s common 1 to 16” twist.

The gun has plenty of safeties with the ambidextrous thumb safety at back below the slide and the grip safety behind it. The magazine release and slide stop are set up for right-handed users and are on the gun’s left.

The match-grade trigger is made of aluminum and triple ported for lightness that’s transmitted through the crisp break and its factory five to six pound pull weight. Compared to other M1911s, the trigger reach is 1/8” shorter to make it more useable to more people. The trigger guard is an oval fronted by a curve that comes down from the recoil spring housing.

Moving down, the grip has a square butt profile. The side grips are nothing short of lovely, hewn, or rather exactingly carved, out of rich Cocobolo wood and then diamond hatched and otherwise crafted and thinned to reveal the timeless M1911 double-diamond design. Their middles are blazed with the classic Springfield Armory crossed-cannons round logo. The rear mainspring housing has metal checkering though the front is smooth.
