The Springfield Armory EMP Contour Carry semi-automatic pistols are a modern tweak of the classic M1911 shape designed for faster withdrawal in emergency situations. Let’s start with some basics. EMP stands for Enhanced Micro Pistol. Compared to standard M1911 types of pistols, EMP Contour Carry guns feature curved surfaces. Lots of them. Let’s look at some.

The barrel’s upper surface is curved from perfectly horizontal to vertical flanks. It’s truly a beautiful design element that is satin finished on top but natural stainless steel for the flanks. The hammer is curved into a loop with the upper surface having serration grips. Unlike some other pistols, the EMP Contour Carry has slide grips only in back. Moving further down, the pistol grip’s posterior heel slopes in negatively from the back resulting in a narrower grip base.

Of course, some things aren’t curved. The front sight is red fiber optic and ramps down toward the muzzle. The rear sight is what Springfield Armory calls “low profile combat,” otherwise known as two white dots on a square notch Dovetail configuration.

The lightweight milled trigger has vertical ridging presumably for enhanced lateral feel. Rubber grips with deep hatching run snug around the gently curved grip.

The resulting contours look purposeful, optimized not only for a low profile concealed carry and quick, snag-free withdrawal, but also to be lightweight.
