The Springfield Armory M1A SOCOM 16 Rifles quartet are all variants of the same .308 Win (7.62x51mm NATO) 10+1. These semi-autos are civilian legal modern versions of the US Army’s iconic M14 originals that were standard issue from 1959 to 1970, and SOCOM is the acronym of the United States’ Special Operations Command. Springfield takes the standard M1A and changes the dynamics by fitting it with a 16.25” long 6-grove carbon steel barrel with a 1:11” right-hand twist barrel in lieu of the standard longer 22” length barrel. Springfield also shortened the gas system.

Each M1A SOCOM 16 has a fully adjustable for windage and elevation rear sight, a two-stage SOCOM 16 trigger with a 5 to 6-pound trigger pull weight, a 10-round detachable box magazine and more!

Fronting the barrel is a special recoil damping muzzle brake with visually engaging radial porting on the upper surface. Atop the rifle, you’ll find a XS Post .125” blade front sight (with a tritium insert!) paired to a ghost ring .135 aperture rear sight that’s MOA toolless-adjustable for both windage and elevation via textured knobs. That’s right: all you need to adjust the rear sight are your fingers.

The four models differ as follows. The standard model is the M1A Tanker. Though the name is a tad different, it’s part of the SOCOM 16 series because its main difference is its nostalgia tanker (read: closed quarters) dimensions and walnut stock. It’s 37.25” long overall and weighs 8 pounds 9 ounces.

Moving neither up nor down, but laterally, you can get the same gun (called M1A SOCOM 16) with the black polymer stock. This lowers weight by an ounce to 8 pounds 8 ounces but length and features are the same.

Next is the M1A SOCOM 16 CQB (close quarters battle) stock. The polymer Archangel CQB stock is black, tough, durable and adjustable. The Archangel stock has a flared magwell that makes for fast magazine swaps. The five-position adjustable length-of-pull means overall length can be set for 35.5” to 38.5” and the cheek riser is adjustable too. It has three additional sections of Picatinny rail you can use to crenellate the bottom and both sides.

In back you get a recoil mitigating anti-snag rubber recoil pad. Moreover, instead of the integrated curved pistol grip of the two prior models, this gun comes with a straight AK-style pistol grip with horizontal grip serrations along the front.

Beyond the stock, this CQB model is about the same as the first two. But it includes a miniature red dot sight mount. The red dot isn’t included, but no one’s complaining since the next model neatly fills that niche. Weight nudges up to 9 pounds 2 ounces.

The fourth model called M1A SOCOM 16 CQB Rifle w/ Vortex Venom says it all in its name. It’s the same as the last model but adds a Vortex Venom red-dot optic.
