The Springfield Armory M1A Scout Squad Rifles quartet are all variants of the same .308 Win (7.62x51mm NATO) 10+1. These semi-autos are civilian legal modern versions of the US Army’s iconic M14 originals that were standard issue from 1959 to 1970. Springfield takes the standard M1A and re-envisions it with a wieldier tactical-length 18” barrel in lieu of the standard longer 22” length barrel.
Each M1A Scout Squad gun’s hardened core is a fully adjustable for windage and elevation rear sight, a two-stage Scout Squad trigger with a 4.5 to 5-pound trigger pull weight, a 10-round detachable box magazine and more! The M1A has an 18” long Scout Squad medium weight 6-grove carbon steel barrel with a 1:11” twist ratio.
Fronting the barrel is a long recoil damping flash suppressor. Atop the rifle, you’ll find a Scout Squad .062” blade front sight paired to a military non-hooded .0690 aperture rear sight that’s MOA adjustable for windage and elevation.
The two main models differ only in their stocks and the colors of their upper forends. You can have matte black polymer or genuine walnut. Overall length spans 40.33”. However, the polymer lowers weight by 11 ounces. Thus, the polymer Scott Squad tags in at 8 pounds 8 ounces while its walnut stock sibling tips scales at 9 pounds 3 ounces. The walnut stock version has a tan upper forend. Both walnut and black polymer stock models include a Scout-style Picatinny rail on top.
In either model, you get front and back sling swivels, rugged durability and a wonderful attention to detail that befits this premium rifle.
Additionally, there are corresponding New York-compliant variants for both the walnut and polymer models. They’re the same as the standard models except they omit the long flash suppressor. Length is a neat 37” and weight drops by 3 ounces for each. Thus, the New York-compliant polymer model weighs 8 pounds 5 ounces while its walnut counterpart is 9 pounds even.
